For years I’ve felt a looming goal brewing in the background… “To prototype a more sustainable/regenerative way of living *in the city*”.
We just bought a small plot to build our refuge in Porto and it suddenly got more real🙀.
🧵of🧵to document our journey trying to:
@tylerangert Was just discussing this with my CEO. The “empty chat box” also offloads most of the cognitive burden to the user.
I see the main job of a product as anticipating users’ needs, presenting them the right options at the right times. IME this is very hard to do with the empty box.
Crowdfunding action for the School of Traditional Architecture and Crafts!
First 36h and already 13K+ have been gathered!
Once the student dorms will be created, the tuition fee can decrease dramatically and we can start having all-year-round courses.

@babieswithb Yep, born and bred! Don’t think so, I just had a baby and find Montessori-like approaches interesting so that’s probably why I found you on twitter
@babieswithb I had the exact same thoughts today when I struggled to get my aer through a minuscule door step and then 4 or 5 steps… I love the small footprint and ease of opening/closing with one hand, but the streets of Porto weren’t made for those tiny wheels.
@DamonZumbroegel@murexromano@wrathofgnon I believe the other point being made is that the part of your profession represented by the Pritzker prize was already possessed by demons anyway.
So public opinion recognizing it as evil gives more chance to the good part of your profession (Driehaus, Manzano, …) to shine.
@ryanscottborman@RobertSterry6@CharlestonArchi 💯 I’m only building my own house, but I’ve been told it’s impossible/very expensive, it doesn’t make sense (because “pastiche”), and that so many buildings in my street/city have already defaced the traditions of our place that they simply do not exist anymore…
@ErikBootsma@CharlestonArchi Needless to say the architects visited the site precisely twice. Once before they started and once when foundations/timber frame/walls where already done.
Their office is a 10min walk from us.
@ErikBootsma@CharlestonArchi I should have. But I steel needed an architect to sign whatever gets submitted to the municipality.
In the end, I (supported by the different builders) designed almost everything. Floor plans, windows, stairs, construction details, lightning, electricity, hydraulics…
@CharlestonArchi But maybe because it was a bit too late in the process?
In any case, it was more important to me that our facade didn’t look so incoherent (for lack of a better word). Even if it meant some compromises on the floor plans.
@CharlestonArchi My architects designed the first one. With help from accs like yours and books like “Get your house right”, I “redesigned” to get the second one (hopefully very close to what will be built).
In our case it was tricky to reflect the changes to the facade on the floor plan…
