Today in history, July 9, 1776 A copy of the Declaration of Independence reached General George Washington at his headquarters on Number One Broadway in New York City. At 6 pm he ordered troops to assemble on the Common, now known as City Hall Park. There, the Declaration was read aloud to soldiers and citizens. Washington noted in his orders that he hoped the news would inspire every officer and soldier to fight with courage knowing the peace and safety of the country depended on the success of their arms. That night, patriots marched to Bowling Green and pulled down the bronze and lead statue of King George III. There was a cast-iron fence surrounding Bowling Green, specifically to protect the statue, but on the night of July 9, 1776, the crowd damaged its decorative finials (which resembled crowns) while toppling the statue. The fence still encircles the park today and is recognized as New York City’s oldest fence.
