@ituki_vt Your kind words stuck with me. I ended up redrawing the Zorua and Vulpix yesterday, as well as others.
I did not draw the Krabby or Crabrawler, however.
@buccellatiddies Half the modernization of Eevee came from how official works have changed Eevee over time. It's also based off modern Pokemon like Yamper and Zorua, simpler head shape with colours all over it. In fact, it probably wouldn't even have fluff on its head at all.
This has come up again and it's always fun to see discussion.
I drew below to try to explain how I think the design principles changed. It's mostly about weight, anatomy and detail.
Newer Pokemon are more complex in design concept but less realistic in proportion and weight.
@Gold_Starz yeah whoever drew that should be ashamed of themselves (i did it and i am lol)
Here's a rework using the regional forms as an example for Vulpix, while Zorua is closer to Eevee so I used that as an example.

@XaelTheArtist yeah there's plenty of reasons.
the move from limited sprites, expanded market audience, iconic silhouettes, the push for "weird/ugly", the shift away from battles being the sole focus of a Pokemon, designing for animation, different artists on board, etc
@hplksw Every now and then I see this on my timeline
I drew that Pidgey, Vulpix, Zorua and Pikipek so long ago to explain the stylistic changes over time. 3D modeling, merchandising and accessibility I think contributed to the simplistic designs in later regions.
@blawn_z Yeah I get what you're saying, but that was applied. The modernized Kanto Ponyta has a tougher, faster appearance, with modernized fire but it's still sharper than modern Galarian Ponyta.
I tried to make the classic Galarian Ponyta elegant, softer like a mystical, show pony.
@PunishMacilento I know it's personal preference, but wouldn't that be the point of the official Galarian Ponyta? Like it's reminiscent of a kid's toy pony. It's also closer resemblance to the prevo of Ponyta in the beta imo.
@hplksw I don't know who drew the Krabby and Crabrawler, but I drew the others years ago. The crabs are much better than my rushed ones, whoever did that is incredibly talented. I don't really care about crediting though.
Feel free to not follow me either lol

Hey! We're on a Panel at PaxAus tomorrow.
Drop by to learn about how we design and draw monsters for games, film or animation, then we're gonna be drawing monsters LIVE and giving them away at the end!
