I was thinking about the 2002 Powerpuff Girls Movie and how there was NO celebrity voice casting.

None of the main characters got arbitrarily recast with a celeb. No new villain was created so a celeb could be in the cast.

JUST the voice actors from the TV show. And it was FINE

A cartoon that was free to watch on YouTube the whole time it aired just made more than $37 million in movie theaters. The studio behind it, around 100 people in Sydney, paid for the entire thing by selling plushies and T-shirts.

The Amazing Digital Circus ended this month after nine episodes and almost three years. No network paid for it, and no investor put in money. The studio, Glitch Productions, started in 2017 as two brothers animating in a family home in Sydney. Years earlier, one of them, Luke, had built a Super Mario fan channel called SMG4. It grew big enough to pay for the move into their own shows.

Each episode cost up to $300,000 to make. Most of that money came from selling merchandise, plus ad revenue and a few government arts grants. The shows stayed free. Anyone could watch the whole series on YouTube without paying.

Netflix started carrying the show in 2024, but the deal was unusual. New episodes still came out on YouTube first, for free, and Glitch kept full control of the story. Netflix could stream it but had no say in how it was made.

By the end, the first episode alone had passed 440 million views, more people than live in the United States, and more than any other independent cartoon pilot on YouTube. The finale, called The Last Act, ran in cinemas first. It opened to $36.6 million worldwide and set new records for the company that put it in theaters, then went up free online two weeks later.

Most cartoons get paid for by a studio and hidden behind a paywall, and the audience only shows up at the end. Glitch did it the other way around. The fans came first, the show stayed free, and the merchandise paid for everything else, including a finale that packed theaters around the world.

LILO IS GONE

Daveigh Chase, the voice of Lilo in Lilo & Stitch, has died at 35. She passed on June 16 from meningitis that turned into a blood infection and sepsis.

A whole generation grew up on her voice without ever knowing her face.

- She voiced Lilo as a kid and won an Annie Award for the role
- As Samara in The Ring, at 12 she beat Daniel Day-Lewis and Willem Dafoe for an MTV Best Villain award
- She was Samantha Darko in Donnie Darko, the cult classic of a generation
- Her boyfriend launched a GoFundMe for her just one day before she passed

Ohana means nobody gets forgotten.

A good day to remember the profound care Disney poured into Atlantis.

Let's talk about The Creation of Atlantean. 🌊

To build the world, Disney hired Mark Okrand, the linguist who also created the famous Klingon and Vulcan for the Star Trek series.

Okrand created a fully functional, learnable language. He designed it under the narrative premise that Atlantean was a "root dialect" or a "Tower of Babel" language, the ultimate mother tongue from which all human languages evolved. To achieve this ancient, foundational sound, Okrand primarily utilized Proto-Indo-European roots.

The actual visual characters (the glyphs) were created by comic book artist Mike Mignola, the creator of Hellboy. Mignola designed the unique script shown on the chart.

In the lore of the film, the language is written in a system called 'boustrophedon', meaning it is read from left to right on the first line, right to left on the second line, and continues alternating back and forth, mimicking the movement of an ox plowing a field.
