Earth's spin does more than just give us day and night — it physically holds the ocean bulge that shapes the entire planet. Right now, centrifugal force from rotation pushes Earth's equator about 21 km farther from the center than the poles, and every ocean on the planet sits on top of that bulge.
Take the spin away, and gravity takes over completely: without centrifugal force pushing water outward at the equator, the ocean would gradually redistribute toward the poles, seeking the points of strongest gravitational pull. One widely shared simulation modeling this scenario puts the shift at roughly 9-10 km of water dropping at the equator and 11-12 km rising at the poles — reshaping the planet into two massive polar oceans wrapped around a single, mostly-dry equatorial landmass, with cities like New York ending up above the new coastline and cities like London submerged well below it.
It's worth noting this is a purely theoretical scenario — Earth's rotation isn't stopping anytime soon — but it's a genuinely striking way to visualize just how much of our planet's geography depends on something as simple as spin. 🌍🌀

An explosive eruption is currently occurring at the summit vent of Kanlaon Volcano that began at 5:51 AM today, 8 April 2025. The eruption is producing a voluminous bent plume approximately 4,000 meters tall that is drifting southwest. Pyroclastic density currents or PDCs descended the slopes on the general southern edifice based on IP and thermal camera monitors. Alert level 3 prevails over Kanlaon Volcano.
