Political turmoil is growing in Zambia after the arrest of dozens of opposition politicians, the fatal shooting of a former government minister, and new reports about President Hakainde Hichilema's fraud in the recent presidential election https://t.co/HTqNsGO6u6
Zambian police summoned the nation’s opposition leader after he pledged to challenge the outcome of last week’s presidential election, over which observers have raised concerns https://t.co/2GfBi9Vlgd
The assassination of Mutotwe Kafwaya (Member of Parliament) in Zambia demonstrates the character of the 'election' held in that country under the aegis of President Hakainde Hichilema - whose administration suspended the voting, arrested opponents, and then, the gunfire.
We stand with the Zambian people who deserve better than bullets and truncheons.
Patrick (Kryticous Patrick) Nshindano served as Chief Electoral Officer/CEO of Zambia’s Electoral Commission (ECZ) from around 2019 to August 2022. He managed the 2021 general elections, in which the opposition UPND under Hakainde Hichilema defeated the ruling PF.
He consistently maintained that the ECZ does not rig elections, describing such claims as self-serving political narratives that undermine public trust. He emphasised that results reflect the voters’ will and that parties could verify outcomes through parallel tabulation.
Despite being heavily abused and lampooned by the UPND, he remains, in my view, the best CEO the ECZ will ever have.
Look at what the UPND is running, they could have saved the country money by just suspending the constitution.

Based on reports from 99% of 1,500 CCMG observers, voting & counting were largely transparent, monitors agreed with the official presidential results at all sampled polling stations. CCMG has completed its independent PRVT and is ready to verify ECZ’s final presidential results.
LAZ raised a critical question - Section 67(3) provides for the suspension of counting at a polling station. So what provision of the law gives ECZ power to suspend counting nationwide & to suspend the announcement of results? ECZ must clarify the legal basis for both decisions.
Fellow Zambians,
We have noted with concern that the Electoral Commission of Zambia has suspended the announcement of votes.
We have serious grounds for concern in an attempt to interfere with the will of the Zambian people.
For the 1st time in Zambia’s multiparty election history, ECZ has suspended vote counting & the announcement of election results nationwide. We have seen disputed elections and electoral violence before, but never a nationwide halt to the counting process. This is unprecedented!
