19 years in - and here’s a truth we rarely acknowledge:
Luck. 🍀

Building a business teaches you a lot about pressure, ego, momentum, people, and resilience.
But one element often gets overlooked; maybe because it feels self-deprecating to admit:

That luck played a role.

As if acknowledging it somehow discredits the effort. But you do contribute to luck, not by controlling it, but by shaping the environment where it lands.

There’s a French saying: “la chance tourne”, luck turns.
And while we can’t command it, I believe we can invite it.

Key factors that open the door to synchronicity:
• Sleep
• Health
• Focus
• Relationships
• Resilience
• Clarity of intention

Julius Caesar believed he was unusually lucky.
Napoleon hired only “lucky” generals.
Bezos credits his career to “incredible good fortune.”

Synchronicity doesn’t replace effort. It amplifies it.

Jung called it “meaningful coincidence.”
I call it: Luck in motion.

This photo of Tobias and I was taken at our @77Diamonds showroom in Dubai, a moment of stillness that reminded me how clarity often returns not during storms but in calmer settings.

What if luck wasn’t random?

Some people just seem lucky. Right place, right time. Right idea, right instinct.

But what if luck, synchronicity, and sudden inspiration weren’t separate forces, but symptoms of the same invisible alignment?

We imagine luck as external. A roll of the dice. But consistent “luck” often follows a pattern:

👉 Obsessive focus on a domain
👉 Sensitivity to subtle patterns
👉 Enough stillness for insight to land

Real examples:

🧪 Mendeleev saw the periodic table in a dream; but only after years immersed in chemistry.
⚡ Tesla claimed full inventions arrived in moments of mental stillness; often between waking and sleep.
🎮 Gamers often beat “impossible” levels the morning after; once the brain has processed the problem in dreams.

These moments feel magical. But they’re not random.
You don’t dream of banana trees if you spend your life studying quantum mechanics.
Your subconscious draws from what you give it.

💡 Inspiration often arrives when you stop forcing it.

Luck, in this sense, is prepared alignment, the moment when focus, recovery, and timing intersect.

🧠 Black Friday isn’t just a sales spike; it’s a masterclass in mass psychology.

At @77Diamonds, sales today are 4-5x higher than usual. Some retailers see 8-10x.

But here’s the twist: the same discount has been live for weeks.

So why do people still buy today?

👉 FOMO
👉 Social proof
👉 Anchoring bias
👉 Timing = justification

Even after 19 years, I still find this phenomenon interesting but in retail, even luxury, emotion still beats logic.

But it was the wrong question.

It pushed us toward job titles…
not toward identity, values, or alignment.

Once upon a time, this tiny corner of Antwerp - centred around Hoveniersstraat with the adjacent Empire shopping centre - was shorthand for success in the diamond industry. The Diamond Square Mile here has often been described as one of the highest concentrations of wealth per square mile in the world, with billions of dollars in stones changing hands every year.

Walk down the street today and the story feels very different. The Shopping Center, which in the '80s was buzzing as a luxurious niche shopping mall, looks tired. The poster nearby on the street does not sell glamour, it has to justify the importance of natural diamonds. That alone says a lot about how much the world, and the industry, has changed.

Antwerp is still important. A large majority of the world’s rough diamonds still pass through this district at least once in their journey. But the value chain has moved. More than ninety percent of the world’s diamonds are now cut and polished in India, centred around Surat and Mumbai, while Dubai has become one of the dominant hubs for rough trading.

Since this shift really started towards more than 30 years ago, rather than in the last 20 years or so; at @77Diamonds, we have never relied much on Antwerp. Over the years, the share of our inventory sourced in Antwerp has also, in fact, gradually declined; simply because the kind of competitive, varied stock we need is increasingly found elsewhere rather than in my birth town.

At the same time, margins have shrunk and compliance and reporting demands have steadily increased. Belgian and EU rules are often well intentioned, but they do add layers of cost and complexity to doing business, especially compared with the more incentive-driven environments in places like Dubai or the government-backed cutting and polishing ecosystem in India. From a purely competitive standpoint, it raises a fair question about how Europe wants to position itself in this trade over the next decade.

Most markets do not move in straight lines but when you stand on that street today, it does not feel like a simple temporary dip for Antwerp as a diamond hub, it feels like a deeper structural shift.

So the question I keep coming back to is this

Are we somewhere near the end of the downtrend, or still at the beginning of the end for Antwerp as a true centre of the trade, and will policymakers choose to actively support this ecosystem, or simply manage the gradual decline of an "Empire"?

I would be genuinely interested to hear how others in the trade see Antwerp’s future.

Have Gold Prices Peaked?

Gold prices have been on quite the run since late 2023, climbing faster than what we've seen in years at a pace not seen since the early 2000s; setting new records and reshaping jewellery markets worldwide.

With trade optimism returning between the US and China, could prices now find stability? Possibly though, even at $3,600 an ounce, gold would still be priced at double what it was a year ago.
