Something extraordinary has been discovered beneath the Saskatchewan prairie. A drilling operation near Central Butte encountered underground gas containing up to 28.6% natural hydrogen, along with significant helium. The discovery could challenge decades of assumptions about where hydrogen can exist underground—and whether it can accumulate in commercially meaningful reservoirs.
The Lawson well sits roughly two kilometres beneath southern Saskatchewan, where ancient rock formations and massive salt deposits created geological conditions that may have allowed hydrogen to become trapped underground. For a province already famous for potash, oil, and decades of drilling expertise, this discovery could open an entirely new chapter in Canada's energy story.
