**1/ THE PIPE**

Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in June 2026, Putin was explicit:

"One string of Nord Stream 2 is intact. It can deliver 27.5 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe. This is only for the decision of the German government. Press the button, and the gas starts flowing."

27.5 bcm per year. That is roughly 8% of total European gas imports — from a single pipe.

**2/ THE RESPONSE**

Berlin rejected the offer.

A German government spokesman ruled it out. Germany froze the Nord Stream 2 approval process in February 2022 and never opened it. The pipeline was never commissioned.

Putin's reply: "They have to decide what is more important for them — fulfilling some kind of alliance commitment, or safeguarding their national interests."

**3/ THE COST**

Germany's losses from the Nord Stream sabotage have surpassed **€160 billion**, according to Bundestag members.

Heating costs have risen **82% since 2021** — the highest level on record.

Industrial energy costs are **80% higher** than before the war. German households now pay **80% more** for gas than before.

**4/ THE PRICE GAP — THE NUMBERS**

Here is where people get confused. Let me be precise.

**Wholesale prices today (18 September 2026):**

**Ratio: 28 ÷ 2.83 = 9.9x. Nearly 10 times.**

**Now, the three levels of clarification:**

**a) Wholesale vs retail.** TTF and Henry Hub are wholesale prices, not what you pay at home. Your bill includes taxes, margins, distribution. The retail gap is smaller — but still enormous.

**b) LNG costs don't explain it.** Liquefaction, shipping, regasification add 5–7 $/MMBtu. Not 25. As Czech analyst Lukáš Kovanda put it: "These costs do not explain a tenfold gap."

**c) The real cause: LNG capacity shortage.** The US exported a record 17.4 bcf/d of LNG in H1 2026. Not enough. You cannot build a liquefaction terminal in weeks. So the European price must rise to whatever level attracts the few available cargoes. It is an auction, not a normal market.

**Bottom line: the 10x figure is technically correct, verified by multiple analysts, and it is a policy outcome — not a market error.**

**5/ THE NUMBERS**

Europe's total losses from rejecting Russian energy: **€3 trillion**, according to Putin's envoy Kirill Dmitriev.

**80% of Europe's LNG** now comes from US shale gas — at prices far higher than Russian pipeline gas.

The EU is locked into a phase-out of Russian gas. REPowerEU is the plan. But the plan has a price.

**6/ THE CONSEQUENCE**

Germany is deindustrializing in real time.

Industrial production is falling. Factories are closing. The country that was Europe's industrial engine is losing its core.

AfD is at **29-30% nationally**. In Saxony-Anhalt, **43.8%**.

The political price of the energy price is already being paid.

**7/ THE VERDICT**

Putin is not lying. He is explaining.

The pipe is there. The gas is ready. The decision is in Berlin — but the pressure is from Washington.

Germany could cut its energy costs tomorrow. It is choosing not to.

That is not a market failure. That is a political decision that is destroying European industry and enriching American LNG exporters.
