I note with extreme concern the armed encounter on May 16 which claimed the lives of five, including UP Cebu alumnus Vince Dingding. We must give peace a chance, for the alternative is an endless cycle of violence that will end with military hegemony supplanting civilian control.
Alyssa Alano and Maureen Santuyo were two young minds who were exploring which road they should take. But the AFP's bullets cut short that process of exploration that is natural to youth. That is a crime and a tragedy.
President Marcos should immediately order the AFP to cease all offensives in all parts of the country. The admin must also begin negotiations aimed at bringing about a genuine and permanent peace.
I repeat, let us end the bloodshed once and for all.
I am devastated and outraged at the killing of UP Diliman student leader Alyssa Alano, who was killed in a military offensive with 18 others.
I call for genuine peace, which can only happen when the systemic conditions that produce armed insurrection are properly addressed.
Academic freedom is the freedom to express the truth, not to spread lies.
Punongbayan and Paloyo have intentionally and maliciously violated this principle, and I have sought disciplinary action with their respective universities.
TWO MORE ALARMING CASES OF WEAPONIZATION OF THE LAW
I am extremely alarmed by the filing of sedition charges against at least 70 protesters and the conviction of Frenchie Mae Cumpio and Marielle Domequil, cases that clearly aim to stifle dissent and progressive movements.
I celebrate the release of peasant organizer Amanda Echanis, cleared of trumped-up charges of illegal possession of firearms and explosives. Her acquittal is not only a personal vindication, but a reminder of the need for constant vigilance in the defense of democratic rights.
For more than fifteen years, Mary Jane Veloso has endured human trafficking, the cruelty of carcerality, and the victimization of our economic system. She has suffered far beyond what justice or humanity can justify.
I join those who seek her immediate release.

❗️All pro-democracy forces must be extremely alarmed by the creeping campaign of intimidation and harassment by Philippine police forces, who are censoring and attacking brave student leaders of the anti-corruption and broader progressive movements.
We must be vigilant against the creeping rise of authoritarianism which begins with the normalization of small acts of police overreach. I stand in solidarity with the progressive youth who are fighting for a better future for us, and call all democratic forces to do the same.
