@JP_Mc_C I have relatives from a small village where all the pubs have closed because the population gradually dispsersed to the surrounding countryside over the last 20 years or so. If people live within walking distance of viallages, they stay vibrant.
@JP_Mc_C Housing for All & Croí Cónaithe have provisions for Local Authorities to provide serviced sites in towns and villages that would consolidate new housing in those areas, but I don't know if this has been acted on by many LAs
@JP_Mc_C I'm not familiar with Annascaul, but if there is a village there, it will have a much higher chance to retain its pubs/ shops/ any other services or facilties if people live in the village itself rather than in the hinterland at ditances requiring cars to access the village.
@AndrewG72179140@bberrybeth365 We don't have the GRA as a result of the marriage referendum, it was legislated for separately. And the referendum was far from an easy win; it was hard fought by all invovled.
@DuncanHegan1 Ireland was delighted with the level of cooperation and good relations in evidence at the time of QEII's visit in 2011. Brexit undermined that relationship, not Ireland.
@Iskesullas The article doesn't mention that over half the money spent under the Warmer Homes scheme went to local authority and low income homes for free energy upgrades.

@Keyes I think the main problem with the proposal is that a park in that location would undermine the historic Georgian landscape of Merrion Square, a coherent urban set piece. Perhaps pedestrianise the carriageway to allow continuous public open space, but without planting.
@Keyes Hi Seán, interesting idea, but why bury the street? Just close it to traffic; traffic can take the short detour around Merrion Square. Traffic underpasses require long and very unsightly ramps that would need to extend along most of Merrion Street
