A Call for Inclusion: Recognizing a Disability Constituency in Climate Negotiations
Dear @antonioguterres@UN
In light of your inspiring message, “You Can Count On Me,” https://t.co/TBRqRs4pAJ, delivered to youth climate activists at COP29, we, the @enable_rdc a youth-led disabilty organisation, are reaching out to seek your personal support in advocating for the recognition of an official disability constituency within the intergovernmental climate negotiation process.
As highlighted in the recent public letter from eight regional and global disability organizations, the climate crisis disproportionately impacts persons with disabilities—an estimated 1.3 billion individuals, or 16% of the global population. Climate adaptation strategies must incorporate the principles of universal design and accessibility, ensuring that barriers are removed for persons with disabilities. Such inclusivity is essential for achieving a Just Transition for all.
The indispensable participation of persons with disabilities in climate policy discussions at all levels—local, national, regional, and international—is crucial.
Despite ongoing efforts by Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) and allies, the absence of disability as an official constituency within the @UNFCCC UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) remains a significant concern. This exclusion undermines the rights and representation of persons with disabilities, as stipulated in Article 4.3 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
In other spheres of intergovernmental engagement, such as the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sendai Framework, disability is recognized as a Major Group and Stakeholder. The establishment of a disability constituency within the UNFCCC would similarly empower persons with disabilities, allowing them equal opportunities to participate, make plenary interventions, receive vital information from the UNFCCC Secretariat, and collaborate effectively alongside other constituencies.
Currently, there is a growing coalition of organizations dedicated to disability inclusion in climate action, encompassing a diverse range of voices from various regions. The recognition of a disability constituency is crucial not only for representation but also for developing effective global climate solutions. Inclusion will help create resilient and sustainable communities that cater to the needs of everyone.
We respectfully urge the government delegations at COP29 to call on the @UNFCCC to clarify the process for recognizing a disability constituency and to expedite decisions on this matter. Your leadership and support can make a significant difference, ensuring that the voices of persons with disabilities are heard and included in climate negotiations.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue. Together, let us work towards a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
I Call for the solidarity of all #CSOs and #Constituencies @youngo_unfccc@IDA_CRPD_Forum@iddcconsortium@RIADISorg@DisabilityFed@HI_federation@CBMuk@GDS_Disability
Sincerely,

I TRULY APOLOGISE for the comments I made regarding the protests and the authenticity of certain images.
In the heat of the moment during the debate on the finance bill, my words were unnecessary, misguided and insensitive.
It’s becoming clear that @SafaricomPLC have been aiding in the abductions of Kenyans all for exercising their right to protest.
We noted the unholy proximity between Safaricom and GoK where the CEO @PeterNdegwa_ and head of MPesa Sitoyo Lopokoiyit accompanies Ruto to White House.
Sitoyo Lopokoiyit is not only a member of Ruto’s inner circle, but he’s married to the sister of Kasarani MPig Ronald Karauri.
That nexus facilitated the theft of SportPesa and eventual displacement of its original shareholders.
Safaricom sharing data with the Police without court orders is illegal. And it’s time we hold the company accountable.
