More proof that death penalty remains a deterrent. Fully acknowledge other factors involved with it. But man this thing seems to be protecting us from our neighbours in all directions.
I'm not saying the death penalty caused that difference, but why remove a possible deterrent before strengthening policing and our justice system?
My argument: Fix the system to atleast make justice certain, fair and effective. Then we debate abolition.
I understand the argument that research has not established the death penalty as a deterrent to murder. But I don't think we should dismiss deterrence altogether.
That reputation may itself discourage some criminals from seeing Botswana as an easy place to operate
Our homicide rate is also considerably lower than SA's.
