We used to have Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown in the same backfield. Real Running Back U. We used to have Takeo Spikes hunting ball carriers, Karlos Dansby making plays all over the field, Carlos Rogers locking down receivers, and Junior Rosegreen delivering hits that made people remember his name.
We had Cam Newton and Nick Marshall taking over games and making plays with their arms and legs, and Nick Fairley wrecking offensive lines.
That Auburn owned the trenches. Physical. Nasty. Stout on both sides of the ball.
What happened to that version of the Tigers?
The identity that made this program different feels like it’s been missing for a while now. We don’t look like the teams that used to wear opponents down and force them to earn every yard.
Where did the real Auburn Tigers football go?

Unpopular take after four games.
Byrum Brown is not the problem. Jeremiah Cobb is not the problem. The skill players are not the problem. The offensive line is the problem, and it isn’t particularly close.
Auburn is near the bottom of the country in sacks allowed and tackles for loss. Florida dropped seven on them in one night. Golesh has already said out loud that they still haven’t found their best five. Everything else people are complaining about sits downstream of that.
Brown’s efficiency is down because he’s running for his life half the time. The run game never settles because the interior can’t create consistent push. Possession time is terrible because drives keep dying behind the line of scrimmage. Special teams and short fields are carrying more of the load than they should because the offense can’t sustain anything against real defenses.
You can yell about the quarterback all you want. You should demand more carries for Mabson! You can call for the backup. None of it matters if the five guys in front of them keep getting beat.
This is still a 3-1 team that just got its first SEC win. It’s competitive. It’s not soft. It’s also not what a lot of people thought it would be when Brown followed Golesh here with those USF numbers.
Fix the line or the ceiling stays right where it is. Everything else is noise. Tennessee will expose it again if they don’t!

@FadetheZamboni You quoted rankings and got both wrong. Florida’s 7th, not 5th. Auburn’s a top-50 school. You can’t read a list and you’re talking like you run the university. Sit down. First SEC snap is tonight in a house your team can’t win in after dark!

LSU has been selling one jump since 1988.
79,431 people. One play. They named the whole night after it.
Tonight is 88,043, Florida is in the building, and this bowl holds noise.
Send this to your section before you leave the tailgate.
Stand up from the snap! Stay up on third down! Stay up when we score! Stay up when we don’t! Stay up in the fourth!
The student section is already on them at warmup. Do not sit down and give it back! Let’s take back the Earthquake game!
This is the earthquake.

Y’all were 2-6 in the SEC last year. One more win than the tombstone you’re quoting. Fired the coach midseason. Lost at home to Golesh’s USF team. Now you’re 2-0 because you beat FAU and FCS Campbell… and you trailed the FCS team 3-0.
I don’t think you or that team should be pounding your chest too hard... your record inside Jordan Hare isn’t favorable!
There are quiet Saturdays on the Plains, and then there are the ones that feel like the whole town is holding its breath. Tomorrow is the second kind.
Florida comes back to Jordan-Hare for the first time since 2011. Night. ESPN. 6 p.m. CT. First SEC snap of the Alex Golesh era at home. First time these two programs have shared a field in seven years.
And the building they are walking into is not a neutral building.
Florida helped open it. Thanksgiving Day, 1939. It was called Auburn Stadium then. About 7,500 seats on a hillside. The Gators dressed in Opelika because the field house was not finished. Babe McGehee caught a pass from Dick McGowen for the first touchdown this grass ever saw. 7-7.
They were here for the birth of the place.
They have not won on this grass since Oct. 16, 1999.
That is not a vibe. That is the record. One night win in this stadium. Kickoff was 8:11. Tomorrow is night game No. 6 for them here, and it falls 45 years to the day after Jordan-Hare played its first game under the lights.
The years in between are why people talk about this house the way they do.
In 2001 an unranked Auburn team beat No. 1 Florida 23-20 on a Damon Duval field goal with 10 seconds left. In 2006 No. 11 Auburn beat No. 2 Florida 27-17 with Tim Tebow on the other sideline. Tebow never beat Auburn. In 2011, the last time the Gators played here, it was night again. Auburn 17-6. Florida 194 yards.
Nick Saban later said the quiet part on national television. He called Jordan-Hare haunted. He called a night game here the haunted house.
Florida’s coach is 0-4 against Auburn and 0-2 in this stadium. Their quarterback has never started on the road. They are on a six-game road losing streak. The books still made them a 2.5-point favorite.
Golesh already has a win over these people. Last September. Their house. USF 18-16. Walk-off field goal. Same quarterback tomorrow night: Byrum Brown.
Jon Sumrall said they were friends this week.
Golesh: “Not this week we’re not.”
Florida is 2-0 because they scheduled FAU and Campbell and scored 118 points. Auburn is 2-0 because they survived Baylor on the last snap in Atlanta and then sat through a lightning delay and dropped 43-8 on Southern Miss in front of 88,043.
Same record. Only one of those 2-0s has been in a fight.
Tomorrow the lights come on again. Twenty-two straight sellouts. One of the largest on-campus stadiums in the country becomes one of the largest cities in Alabama for three hours.
They helped open this house.
They do not own the night.
War Eagle.
