Plastic straws were identified by the UK Plastics Pact as one of eight problematic plastic items to be eliminated. They were selected because there were no practical options which could make them environmentally acceptable.

As well as the use of plastic and paper straws being unnecessary in most circumstances, they are also highly unlikely to be recycled.

The ban on supplying plastic straws and stirrers as well as plastic-stemmed cotton buds came into force in England in October 2020, with the rest of the UK following suit - expanded to further items in 2023.

To date the UK Plastics Pact has eliminated over 33 billion problematic and unnecessary items from sale and distribution, a 99.8% reduction.
