The most interesting thing about the new Charli is how it commits to its sluggish talk-singing. The hooks aren’t “catchy” or things to really sing along with, which means the listener is always an observer/spectator, which is perf for songs so concerned with performance & self.
noticing that a lot of people fundamentally distrust their own taste because they treat it as nothing more than a signal so as soon as someone disagrees, their confidence (in their taste/the work) collapses… which is sad
New Charli is actually listenable and enjoyable, I love the atmosphere it captures. I'm glad it's an intentional departure from "LA music". Songwriting on this project is surprisingly impactul.
