Lesedi FM under fire for naming Oufadafada's track song of the year
The Free State music community is in turmoil after broadcaster Lesedi FM and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) came under intense scrutiny over this year’s Song of the Year selection.
The Free State Music Association (FSMA) has given both Lesedi FM and the SABC 24 hours to explain how the contentious choice was made.
At the centre of the dispute is the decision to name Oufadafada’s “Ya Itshepelang Modimo” as Lesedi FM’s biggest song of the year at midnight on 31 December, a selection that sparked widespread listener anger and disbelief on social media.
Critics say the track was relatively unknown, had minimal chart presence and limited airplay, and did not reflect popular opinion.
In a strongly worded statement, FSMA accused the station of lacking transparency and sound governance in its decision-making, and warned that the controversy has divided artists and fans in the Free State music scene.
The association is demanding clear details on the criteria and verification processes used to determine the award.
FSMA chairman Morris Rhoda also suggested there may have been interference by senior management in the selection process, pointing to other more popular songs that were reportedly overlooked. The group has threatened to escalate its complaint to the SABC CEO and board if its concerns are not addressed.
Responding to the backlash, an SABC spokesperson dismissed the allegations as “unfounded,” clarifying that Lesedi FM does not run a formal Song of the Year voting campaign and that the song played at the New Year was not chosen through listener or stakeholder votes.
The row has also fuelled a separate https://t.co/u9AjtLhdOE petition urging Lesedi FM to do more to support local Free State artists, highlighting broader frustrations over airtime and representation on the station.
