If you know a young person who is struggling with their mental health, here is our advice on how to listen.
1. Try not to interrupt, give them space to describe how they're feeling.
2. Reassure them to let them know you're glad they opened up to you.
3. Reflect the feelings they've described to you, so they know you've heard and understood them. E.g. 'that sounds really stressful' or 'I can't imagine how difficult it has been for you.'
4. Ask them how you can help.
5. Help them seek help from a professional.
6. Remember, it's not all on you. You don't have to have all the answers, and simply listening can go a really long way.
