#Nationalpieweek. Our next co-op bakery is Kilmarnock Co-operative Society who had a large bakery in St Andrew Street. Many of the larger co-op societies installed state of the art bakeries that could mass produce all the pies and bread for all their branches.
#Coopofthweek. C is for Carluke. Carluke Co-operative Society was established in 1862 and merged with Scotmid 1981 after 119 years. The first dividend was 1s 6d per £1. The ladies pictured here were at the Fruit and Confections department.
#Coopoftheweek A is also for Armadale - because it's our only branch photo with a cat. The first Armadale Co-operative Society started in 1861 -it's customers were mostly miners from the nearby collieries. Shut in 1868, a new society opened in 1871 had more long lasting success.
We are thrilled to have been awarded £1.9 million from @HeritageFundUK to save our bakery building for the community and to help tell the story of the Scottish Co-operative movement. A huge thank you to them and to all our other supporters.
