A reminder how special the United States of America is, as y told by a founder who’s seen things from other perspectives.
It’s not by accident this is the best place to create, and the best place to bring your idea to the world. Let’s not take it for granted.
Today is America's 250th birthday.
1 year ago, I became of citizen of the USA.
America is the one place where chasing your crazy idea makes people root for you. Whatever the idea is.
A startup nobody asked for. A pop-punk band at 30. A weird little product you can't stop thinking about.
You say it out loud here and people get excited and ask how they can help. That's the magic.
Other places I've lived, I've gotten torn town. Not here.
The USA celebrates you for going after the thing you actually want to build. 250 years in, the best thing America still gives you is permission.
Permission to try. Permission to reinvent yourself. Permission to believe you can do better than the people who came before you.
It isn't perfect. No place is. But I think it's worth celebrating.
Happy birthday to the best place on earth to build your dream.
I'm grateful to be part of it.
At 5:00 this Thursday, March 19, at @venturecafeCMB , let's talk about the #1 reason why startups fail, how to see whether that's your problem, and what to do about it now. Always great to see you at the CIC.
Hey #musicians. James is straight-up a great web designer and builder, as well as a kickass drummer and guitarist. Speaking from experience. Hit him up if you need a site.
I distilled my sessions at @cicnow and @UChicago into a book. Now you can have the first chapter for free at https://t.co/r5SHs61x2z. 7 of 10 chapters are up now. The physical book arrives later this year. Because too many good ideas fail. Let’s fix that.
10. You can tell when you’re getting it right.
You start to hear your values-based messages come back to you from your customers. Good marketing accelerates the business you get from referrals.
The best predictor of future sales is when people tell other people about you.
THREAD: Good ideas shouldn’t fail for stupid reasons.
Since I started working with startups in 2002, I’ve seen too many other good companies — often run by smart people with good ideas — go out of business because they weren’t able to tap into a market.
That drives me crazy.
9. Break it down into steps.
No one goes from unaware to buyer in a single leap. If you understand where they’re coming from and what they’re looking for, it’s easier to get them to take the next step.
OK, you got someone to click. What comes next without breaking the flow?
6. People aren’t rational.
That goes for you and me too.
How we think we decide: “I will weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each option.”
How we actually decide: “I want that. What is it?”
The desire comes before the thinking.
5. Think of your product as the tangible expression of a deeper value.
This is the secret to getting attention. The ‘reason why’ is at the heart of the best brand messages:
• Just Do It
• Like a Good Neighbor
• Think Different
People trust brands that share their values.
