The only time you can truly lock in is when survival is already handled.
When you’re not worrying about rent, food, or how to make it through the week, your mind becomes free to focus fully on building, learning, creating, and taking risks.
That level of focus is hard to achieve when you’re constantly in survival mode.

I made a decision to never joke with my prayer life again in 2023 and here’s one of the major reasons.
That year, I’d reached out to Yemisi to hold me accountable in my walk with God and she was so helpful in her role. One time, she suggested that we go a 5-day fast and pray on some certain issues in our individual lives at the time. We’d notify each other with a fire emoji at 12noon, 3pm and 6pm reminding ourselves to pray and then at 8pm, we’ll hop on a call and pray.
On Thursday night of that week, during our prayer session, Yemisi suggested that we spend some time praying for our parents and we did so fervently.
The next morning, Friday, on my way to work, I received a call from my sister asking me to come to her house after work. I hesitated. She insisted and said something serious had happened the night before.
When I got there, I was told that my mum who was there for omugwo* had been found unconscious in the bathroom the previous night. She had collapsed and could have been lost if help had come any later. By God’s mercy, she was found, and prayers were made on her by them and a Pastor they called before she regained full consciousness.
As I listened, I went quiet inside. Not because I was afraid. But because I was aware. Aware that almost at the same time we were praying for our parents, something was happening that could have ended differently. Aware that God, in His mercy, often goes ahead of us, but still requires us to be in position. Also aware that prayer is not a religious habit; it is a watchtower.
I mean, what if we hadn’t made those prayers that night? What if no one was standing in the gap?
And then I began to ask myself “What if I’m the one God has chosen to stand in the gap as the priest of this home and I failed in my responsibility?”
See, your prayer life is not just about you. It is a covering. A line of defense. Sometimes, God preserves things ahead of time. Other times, He looks for someone who is on guard.
Since then, I have never joked with my prayer life. Not because I’m always strong or motivated, but because I understand the stakes. And in moments when I feel weak or tired, God Himself supplies the grace to stay.
Beyond protection, in my place of prayer, I’ve gotten creative ideas, inspiration for some of the posts you read here on my page and answers to lots of questions. The Holy Spirit indeed guides into the knowledge of all things.
So, do not live prayerless and assume grace will always compensate for negligence. Don’t outsource spiritual responsibility for the people God has placed in your care.
Prayer is not optional for the believer.
It is your essence, your post of duty.
Stay watchful. Someone’s life may depend on it.
