THE CHARLES SMITH GAME.
June 2, 1993. Madison Square Garden. Bulls vs. Knicks. Eastern Conference Finals tied 2-2.
Winner of Game 5 takes control of the series.
Michael Jordan was about to deliver one of the greatest playoff performances of his career.
The Setup.
Pat Riley’s Knicks were built to bruise.
Charles Oakley. Patrick Ewing. Xavier McDaniel. Anthony Mason.
They weren’t just talented. They were intimidating.
New York believed this was their night. Home crowd. Tied series. Game 5 at the Garden. Every reason to believe.
The Performance.
29 points. 10 rebounds. 14 assists.
One of only TWO playoff triple-doubles in Jordan’s entire career. Both came against the Knicks. Both came in games against the Knicks.
The Bulls won 97-94 and took a 3-2 series lead. But the stat line isn’t why we remember this game.
The Moment.
Final seconds. Bulls up by 1.
Ewing draws contact. The ball kicks out to Charles Smith under the rim. Point blank.
Smith goes up. Blocked. Gets it back. Blocked again. Again. Blocked. AGAIN.
Four straight attempts at the rim. Jordan. Pippen. Grant. Every angle closed.
Any one of those shots ties the game and sends Madison Square Garden into chaos.
Instead, Marv Albert gave us one of the most iconic calls in NBA history:
“Ewing for Smith… Smith! Smith! Smith! Smith!”
One of the most unforgettable sequences in basketball history, not because of what happened, but because of what didn’t.
Chicago escaped. Then they beat Phoenix in the Finals and completed the first three-peat of the Jordan era. The Charles Smith game became a hinge moment in NBA history.
The Shoes.
Jordan wore black Air Jordan VIIIs that night. On his feet for 29 points, 10 rebounds, and 14 assists. On the floor for the Charles Smith sequence itself.
These shoes have been positively photo-matched by @sia_photoMatch to Game 5 of the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals. They reached the current owner through Charles Oakley, a close personal friend who regularly received game-worn shoes directly from Jordan, even while competing against him.
Direct chain of custody. Now publicly offered for the first time in Part I of The Locker Room Collection in Weiss Auctions’ May 28, 2026 Sports Cards & Memorabilia Auction.

Some autographs matter because of timing.
This Lew Alcindor signature captures his rookie season, signed under his birth name before becoming Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Late signatures from Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente resonated for very different reasons.
Cameras stood out in 2025, led by a single-owner Leica collection.
Leica MP Chrome (Serial No. 333) sold for $73,750 in July, with additional Leica models drawing strong interest across multiple auctions.
Whether it’s a signed poem, a book leaf, or a signed first edition book, all remain desirable to collectors.
