Last week, Wellbeing of Women took women’s health research to Westminster for the Association of Medical Research Charities Showcase!
With only 2.4% of public and charity-funded research invested in reproductive health and childbirth in the UK, the need for progress has never been clearer. Over the past 60 years, we've stepped in to help fill this gap, investing more than £75 million to drive breakthroughs that improve, and save, women’s lives.
At the Showcase, parliamentarians got hands-on with our research through interactive demos, brought to life by two of our remarkable researchers - Dr Nicola Tempest and Dr Marianne Watters, whose vital research into menstrual fluid could help diagnose conditions like fibroids and adenomyosis.
We were also delighted to engage with so many including Dr Zubir Ahmed MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health Innovation and Safety, Emily Darlington MP, and Nicola Perrin MBE, CEO of AMRC, all of whom took time to learn about our work and champion the importance of women’s health.
A huge thank you to all who visited our stand and to everyone advancing innovation across the sector. From our bold props, to our bright colours, and even some crocheted uteruses, it was a joy to see women’s health so powerfully represented.

4 in 5 women say there have been times when they, or another woman, have not been listened to by healthcare professionals.
You deserve to be heard and involved in every decision concerning your care. That might mean asking questions, pushing back on options that don’t feel right, or even seeking a second opinion.
Advocating for yourself isn’t always easy but it is your right, and it can be life changing.

Have a wonderful Christmas! 🎄
“During a kick-boxing workout, I suddenly felt light-headed and “saw stars”. I staggered to get some water and knew immediately something was very wrong. In A&E they placed me on a stretcher because I was so weak and my legs were elevated for better circulation; my haemoglobin level had plummeted to 47 – nearly four times lower than what’s considered normal for women (around 115). After receiving four units of blood and two iron infusions during a prolonged hospital stay, I started feeling sensations I hadn’t felt in decades. I no longer felt exhausted or cold, and I could walk without breathlessness.
I’d spent some time in A&E the year before, where after being given an iron infusion, a proper investigation was done, and it was discovered that I had fibroids – a major factor behind my heavy, painful periods and chronic iron deficiency. I waited months for a consultant appointment to discuss treatment options, during which time my condition deteriorated."
Thank you to Henrie for sharing her story about how gaps in treatment for fibroids meant she lived with the effects and without suitable treatment for years.

Women are often told that their pain is normal - that their experiences are just part of living.
But just because something is common, that doesn’t mean it should be seen as normal - this includes pain and discomfort.
If you have painful or heavy periods, know that you don’t have to go through them alone. Our Period Symptom Checker can help. Just answer a few short questions about your experiences to find out if you should seek help from a healthcare professional, plus get a personalised letter to take to your GP if you need it.
