The data center fight on today's ballots is really about electric bills. PJM's independent market monitor found data centers drove 63% of the 2025/26 capacity price increase, about $9.3B that reaches customers through higher rates. Many Ohio measures would ban sites over 25 MW. Perry's would instead require developers getting tax breaks to post bonds backing their promised jobs and taxes. Building and fairness can go together: let large loads pay for the power they add.
Kind of crazy, but also not crazy at all, that this election will be decided based on data centers.
I don't think most people know what a data center really is, but it's become a proxy for what people really don't like: smug billionaire tech guys getting another HUGE win.
And even though I am pro business, AI, data centers, etc... generally, I think their staunch defenders are entirely missing the point.
People understand (correctly) that a small number of people are going to get obscenely rich from this technology.
And all the crowing in the world about how AI will benefit people, and level the playing field, is ringing very hollow to most people.
As it should.
AI is the opposite of democratizing, it is perhaps the most centralizing power and wealth creation event in all of human history.
I know it, you know it, and these billionaire tech people know it too.
So even though what's technically on the ballot is data centers, it's really about extreme wealth inequality.
My advice to people that have a big stake in the AI and data center game is to begin asking what genuine concessions you can make to society.
It doesn't matter what this technology can do for people, if it makes the pie increasingly uneven people will vote against it.
And it looks like that's exactly what's happening.
It's National Deviled Egg Day. The only appetizer gone before the turkey's carved, and somehow it's the host's fault for not making 36.
Tip: use week-old eggs (easier peel), steam 12 min, ice bath 5 min. Pipe the filling from a zip bag with a corner cut.
Paprika or no? 🇺🇸
The internet now calls anything with an em dash AI. My English teacher spent a year drilling those into me. Apparently I'm a robot now.
Tip: if AI drafts your email, rewrite the first and last lines yourself and cut it by a third. That's the part people actually read.
The S&P 500 has risen in the 12 months after every midterm since 1950. 19 for 19. My brisket's record isn't that clean, and I own four thermometers.
Tip: don't trade the election. Keep auto-invest on and rebalance once a year, not on election night. Not financial advice.
Thanksgiving is 25 days out. My wife has a spreadsheet with tabs. I have a pie plan and a 3 PM nap.
Tip: make pie dough now. Wrap discs tight, freeze up to 3 months, thaw overnight in the fridge. Cold butter is what makes it flaky.
What pie wins at your house? 🇺🇸
Bitcoin closed October near $77.4K, down 7.3%. Uptober called in sick. My cold wallet didn't even look up.
Tip: before you send, confirm the receive address on your hardware wallet's screen, not your computer's. Malware can swap a pasted address. Not financial advice. #bitcoin
Clocks fell back an hour last night. Nobody told the kids. Up at 5:45 AM asking for pancakes. The only one who got the extra hour was the dog.
Tip: test every smoke alarm today, and replace any over 10 years old. The date is printed on the back. https://t.co/7I9PULZGnA
Carving a jack-o'-lantern tonight? Keep the guts. The kids are about to eat $40 of candy; give them one thing with fiber.
Tip: rinse seeds, dry completely, toss with 1 tsp oil + pinch of salt per cup, roast at 325°F ~20 min, stirring halfway. Wet seeds steam. Dry ones crunch.
Friday: Nasdaq -2.9%, gold -3.6%, bitcoin under $77K, and Intel had its worst day since 1974. Diversification showed up to work and still got mugged.
Tip: keep 3-6 months of expenses in cash so a red day never forces you to sell. Not financial advice. https://t.co/aQVJNow8kv
18 years ago today Satoshi dropped the Bitcoin whitepaper on Halloween. Still the scariest 9 pages a central banker ever read. 🎃
Tip: read it yourself at https://t.co/eC2fzVwFO3. Takes 20 minutes. Know what you own before you stack more. Not financial advice. #bitcoin
DHH says reviewing every line of AI code is "AI psychosis." Bold. I still check my kid's homework and he's never pushed to prod.
Tip: let AI draft, but read every line that touches money, passwords or customer data. Fast and wrong is still wrong. https://t.co/QHLw7p50hS
Costco sells a $200 Thanksgiving for 8 you can pass off as homemade. I won't tell. Your mother-in-law will.
Tip: a frozen turkey thaws ~1 day in the fridge per 4-5 lbs. Weigh it, count back. A 20-pounder goes in the fridge Saturday. 🇺🇸 https://t.co/w2VMy8mBX0
Bitcoin dipped under $78K and $1.1B in leveraged longs got wiped overnight. Leverage turns a good thesis into a sad story.
Tip: coins on an exchange are an IOU. Move your long-term stack to a wallet you control. Not financial advice. #bitcoin https://t.co/cblBo1Mu5m
Pie season is here, and so are the sad, dense crusts. Tip: weigh your flour. One "cup" swings from 120g to 150g depending on how hard you scoop, which is the gap between flaky and hockey puck. A $15 kitchen scale beats grandma's guesswork. Sorry, Grandma.
Companies are rolling back AI tools because the "workslop" takes longer to fix than doing it right. Tip: before you hit generate, write 3 bullets on what "good" looks like. AI is a fast intern, not a mind reader. Ditch the vibes, keep the checklist.
Bitcoin's sitting near $81K and Google searches just hit a five-year low. Retail went quiet while the loud guys bet $1M on X. Tip: set a boring weekly auto-buy, then move the price app off your home screen. Your blood pressure is not a trading signal. Not financial advice.
UPDATE: THE WORKER HAS BEEN FOUND! 🙌 Per the organizer, Walt from Michigan sends a heartfelt thank-you and is absolutely blown away by how much people cared. He's asking for privacy, and GoFundMe is taking the lead on transferring the funds to him. You're all rockstars, and it shows. 🇺🇸
A Red Baron worker was just trying to get through a rough shift when a streamer "pranked" him by pretending to steal money off his phone, for clicks. He said he works hard and it wasn't funny, and they laughed at him. Now the clip is viral and he could lose his job over something he didn't start. Strangers have already raised $125K+ for him. Let's get this working man to a million so he can take care of his family. 🇺🇸
The organizer is still working to get the money to him, and we hope he gets every penny.
