In the last 5 years, US electricity prices have outpaced inflation with no relief in sight. Rate hike requests are at their highest level since the 1980s.
It's more important than ever to track and reduce your energy bills - and avoid power outages - with the latest technologies.
> Residential prices $0.165/kWh (+27%)
> Commercial prices $0.128/kWh (+19%)
> Industrial prices $0.081/kWh (+19%)
What's driving this?
1. Renewable Energy Policy: States with the largest price increases in recent years typically had growth in behind-the-meter solar and costly Renewable Portfolio Standard RPS programs.
2. Neglected Infrastructure: driven by wildfire-related costs, inflation-adjusted electricity prices surged 6.2% in California — the most among states.
Electricity prices charged by investor-owned utilities (IOUs) are higher and have risen faster than those charged by public power utilities.
3. Data Center Growth: growing demand for electricity generation capacity + grid investments. Transmission and distribution system upgrades needed for data centers are paid by ALL ratepayers.
