AMAZON IS QUIETLY BUYING RARE BOOKS, SCANNING THEM TO TRAIN ITS AI — AND THEN DESTROYING THE BOOKS FOREVER.

This sounds like fiction. It isn't.

Let me walk you through one of the most unsettling AI stories of the year, in plain terms.

The investigation was broken by the tech outlet 404 Media, and has since been confirmed and covered by TechCrunch, Inc., Tom's Hardware, Quartz, Futurism, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, and ClashReport.

Here's what they found:

Reporters suspected AI companies were quietly buying and destroying books, but the orders are anonymous, so no one could prove it.
So they got clever: they hid a tracking device (an AirTag) inside a rare book and followed its journey across America.
The trail ended at an Amazon warehouse in North Las Vegas, at a unit called VGT3.

What happens inside is chilling in its simplicity.
Workers there say their entire job is to receive massive shipments of books, cut the bindings off so the pages scan faster, and feed them through machines.

The book is destroyed in the process. "All we do is scan books," one employee said.
The team's logo is a T-rex holding a book, teeth bared, as if about to eat it.

The scale is staggering:

One tracked order alone was around 1,000 books.
An Irish bookshop reported a single order of 5,000.
These orders go back to at least 2024.

Workers reportedly scan the barcode of every book — suggesting an almost unimaginable goal: to digest every book ever published.

And Amazon isn't alone.

This practice, called "destructive scanning," was first exposed in a lawsuit against Anthropic, whose secret "Project Panama" reportedly aimed to scan every book in the world.

Why would a company do this?

One brutal reason: AI is starving for data. The AI giants have already swallowed most of the internet, and now they hunt for high-quality, human-written words. Few things are richer than published books.

Here's what makes it sting.
For centuries, we scanned old books to preserve them.
This does the opposite: the book dies so the machine can learn. And the irony cuts deep — Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 as an online bookstore.
The company built on selling books is now paying to shred them.

Now, the fair side.

Amazon says it "purchases books through commercial channels to improve the products and services customers use," and legally, this is allowed.

A U.S. judge even ruled that turning a physical book into a digital one is "transformative," and therefore not copyright infringement. If you buy a book, destroying it breaks no law.

But something bigger than law is at stake.
When the last physical copy of a rare book is sliced apart, what survives lives only inside a corporation's servers — not on a shelf, not in a library, not in your hands.
And the authors who wrote those pages usually get nothing for this use, and no say in it.

That's the whole fight of the AI age, shrunk into a single image: the work of human minds, harvested to build the machines that may one day replace them — one severed spine at a time.

A company that began by helping the world read is now making sure some books exist only as data.

We should at least ask out loud what we're losing each time a one-of-a-kind book becomes a file, and then a pile of shredded paper.

عمران خان کو اب فوری طور پر ہسپتال کے ماحول میمنتقل کیا جانا لازمی ہے، ایک آزاد اور غیرجانبدار طبی بورڈ کی نگرانی میں۔ ان کا خاندان اور پاکستان کے سرکاری ڈاکٹروں پر بلکل اعتماد نییں کرتے ہیں۔ سب پہلے بھی دیکھ چکے ہیں کہ رپورٹس میں ردوبدل کیا گیا، اعداد و شمار بڑھا چڑھا کر یا دبا کر پیش کیے گئے، پلیٹلیٹس کا معاملہ اس کی ایک مثال ہے۔

اگلے تین ماہ بہت اہم ہیں اور پتہ چلے گا کہ ان کی حالت بہتر ہوتی ہے یا مستقل نقصان میں بدل جاتی ہے۔
ہم سب پریشان ہیں۔
ملک کو آج ان کی ضرورتہے، پہلے سے کہیں زیادہ ہے۔

Imran Khan's medical reports are alarming. I have gone through them with several specialists, and I am writing this in plain language so every Pakistani can understand exactly what is happening.

In order of priority, this is what worries me most: his anxiety and stress levels, his palpitations, and his high blood pressure. Sleeplessness is not mentioned in the report, but looking at the medications, it is almost certainly there too.

I have known Imran Khan for more than 35 years. Stress was never his weakness. That it is now at peak levels tells you everything about what three years of imprisonment and total isolation have done to him.

The causes are not hard to understand: the state of the country, his colleagues in jail, those sentenced, the killed, and their grieving families. His own isolation, no newspapers, no books, no knowledge of what is happening outside. And yes, his anxiety over Bushra Bibi, his sisters, his workers and his party.

Look at the medications, as there is no diagnosis. He is on Citanil and Lexotanil, three times a day. That is not sleeplessness being treated. That is daytime anxiety being treated. Read that twice.

His heart rate is 54 bpm. Doctors will call that "normal." It is not normal for him. His resting heart rate has been in the low 40s his whole adult life, the mark of a lifelong elite athlete. A jump to 54 is a real shift.

He has reported heart palpitations. That is not something to note and move on from. It needs a 24-hour Holter monitor immediately, to catch the frequency and get him on the right medication. Even an Apple Watch linked to an Apple ID outside Pakistan (as that function is disabled in Pakistan) can flag Atrial Fibrillation and palpitations in real time.

He is on three separate BP medications now. That requires proper daily AM/PM monitoring to titrate correctly, not once-a-week guesswork. He is also on a cholesterol-lowering drug. Raised cholesterol at his age is both genetic and stress-driven, and needs diet, exercise, and medication working together, as does his blood pressure. Less salt. More movement. Real monitoring.

And the following tests that must happen now, without further delay:
1) A Stress Test
2) An Echocardiogram
3) Cardiac MRI
4) Cardiac Artery Calcium (CAC) scan, because of raised cholesterol to check for calcified deposits that block arteries and lead directly to heart attacks or the need for stents.
5) Cardiac CT Angiogram and other tests if indicated.

I am deeply worried. Isolation is taking a physical toll on his body. If this is not addressed immediately, the damage may become irreversible with more complications to follow.

@ImranKhanPTI definitely needs to be moved to a hospital environment now, under an independent panel of doctors. Neither his family nor the people of Pakistan trust government-appointed doctors alone. We have already seen reports manipulated before, numbers exaggerated or suppressed, platelets among them.

The next three months will decide whether his condition is reversed or becomes permanent.

We all are alarmed.

The country needs him more than ever before. May Allah keep him healthy. Ameen. 🤲
