Spent the morning at Kings Daughters showing the kids the fire truck! 🚒 Even though they’re still a little young, we had a great time introducing them to basic fire safety and letting them check out the truck up close.
We wrapped up our spring tour of schools with the fire safety house at Madison Elementary School on Wheeling Island on Tuesday! We’ll be back out with more school visits in the fall!
Wheeling Fire Headquarters is now a Safe Haven Baby Box location. A blessing ceremony took place today with Safe Haven Baby Box representatives, fire department personnel, including the WFD Chaplain Corps, city council and staff, and various guests.
Beginning Monday, April 13, WFD will begin inspecting fire hydrants in the city. The process will take place Monday-Thurs, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Testing will not occur on Fridays or weekends. Testing may stir up sediment, resulting in discolored water. It happens, run water until clear.
Our three platoons had the opportunity to meet with staff in Wheeling Hospital’s MRI Department, tour the MRI scanner, and discuss safety protocols. We appreciate the team’s preparation and the opportunity to review WFD’s role in the event of a serious incident.
A job well done, and congratulations to our first recruit class of 2026 – Luke Harto, Samuel Karrasch, and Colin Hutchinson! Today, they successfully completed the initial eight weeks of basic training! Welcome aboard!
Firefighters responded to Virginia Street at 9:40 a.m. this morning for a reported house fire. Crews located flames in the rear of the home on the first floor and quickly brought the fire under control. The occupant was not injured. The cause remains under investigation.
Around 10 a.m. Saturday, WFD was called to a house fire on Popular Ave. A caller reported smoke coming from the rear of the house. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire & confined it to the basement & back of the house. No one was injured. The cause is under investigation.
It was a great day to be outside for some training! Our new recruits continued their basic training, working on hydrant hookups & establishing a water supply. Meanwhile, crews on C Platoon sharpened their technical rescue skills and became more familiar with specialized equipment

About 9:30 a.m., B Platoon units responded to a structure fire in the 500 block of S. Penn St on Wheeling Island. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the kitchen area, which sustained significant damage. One person was taken to West Penn Hospital in Pgh for treatment.

We teamed up with Vitalant to host a blood drive in our training room for a few hours. More than a dozen people donated 13 units of blood, and we’re glad to have served as a host site for this important event.
We welcomed three new fire recruits to the force on Monday. Luke Harto, Sam Karrasch, and Colin Hutchinson began their eight weeks of basic training at Fire Headquarters, where they will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to serve and protect our community.

Around 1:45 p.m., multiple agencies responded to the collapse of the Washington Ave. Bridge over Wheeling Creek during demolition. 3 workers fell; two had non-life-threatening injuries, 1 was seriously hurt. All were conscious & taken to the hospital. Area cleared around 3 p.m.
