These countries have structure.
Job roles, pay and responsibilities are well defined and structured. Plus you don’t see them having thousands colleges of Nursing everywhere. Everything is standardized. This is clearly not the case for Nigeria.

US has BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing and ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing)

Canada has BScN and RPN/LPN (Registered Practical Nurse)

Ghana has BScN (degree nurses) and
RGN (Registered General Nurse)

Lmfao! This is the reason a nurse is being offered 50k salary and they’ll take it. We have so many SON and the number of nurses being graduated yearly is enormous. Life is all about change and growth and if it will benefit you, you’ll have to adapt. Bnsc should be the only way!

RN Nursing built the Nigerian nursing profession. Let's improve it, not erase it.

People say BSc Nursing should be the only pathway to becoming a nurse in Nigeria.

I disagree.

Before universities offered nursing degrees, Schools of Nursing trained the nurses, matrons, educators, and clinical leaders who built the profession and cared for millions of Nigerians.

The problem isn't the RN pathway, it's the quality of education and regulation.

A degree alone does not guarantee clinical competence, just as a diploma alone does not make someone incompetent.

Rather than abolishing the RN pathway, Nigeria should:

- Strengthen accreditation of all nursing schools.
- Standardize training and competency standards.
- Expand affordable RN-to-BSc bridging programmes.
- Invest in better educators, simulation labs, and clinical training.
- Ensure every graduate passes rigorous licensing standards.

This isn't RN vs BSc.

It's about producing safe, competent, ethical nurses while preserving the pathway that built Nigeria's nursing workforce.
