After the Jonestown Massacre, in 1978, writers flocked to Guyana to survey the shambles and excavate the stories. After more than 900 members of the Peoples Temple died—at the behest of cult leader Jim Jones, who forced them to drink Fla-Vor-Aid laced with cyanide—journalists wanted to figure out whether Jonestown was a utopian experiment gone astray or a madman’s fever dream destined to fail. Shiva Naipaul was among them. Two weeks after the massacre, he set off for Guyana. When it was published, in 1980, his book about the events, “Journey to Nowhere,” was controversial for its slanted, disillusioned telling. “The vigorous extremes of life interest him and energize his sentences,” Hua Hsu writes. “I only ever knew Jonestown as a story, and Naipaul’s telling was different from the ones I had grown up reading.” Read Hsu’s review of the recently reissued book: https://t.co/6suMAOEN6j

❗️ Axios reports the Senate sanctions bill targeting Russia now has support from at least 61 senators, including 39 Republicans and 22 Democrats, enough to overcome a filibuster. The legislation would allow the U.S. president to impose 100% tariffs on the five largest buyers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India, and also targets Russia’s shadow fleet.
