Ralph Smart, producer, director and writer who was arguably the most important cog in Lew Grade's ITC machine. Creator of Danger Man, he wrote or co-wrote 72 ITC episodes, directed 31 and it was his belief in Randall & Hopkirk as a concept which convinced a sceptical Grade. 1/
After the Jonestown Massacre, in 1978, writers flocked to Guyana to survey the shambles and excavate the stories. After more than 900 members of the Peoples Temple died—at the behest of cult leader Jim Jones, who forced them to drink Fla-Vor-Aid laced with cyanide—journalists wanted to figure out whether Jonestown was a utopian experiment gone astray or a madman’s fever dream destined to fail. Shiva Naipaul was among them. Two weeks after the massacre, he set off for Guyana. When it was published, in 1980, his book about the events, “Journey to Nowhere,” was controversial for its slanted, disillusioned telling. “The vigorous extremes of life interest him and energize his sentences,” Hua Hsu writes. “I only ever knew Jonestown as a story, and Naipaul’s telling was different from the ones I had grown up reading.” Read Hsu’s review of the recently reissued book: https://t.co/6suMAOEN6j
Things conservatives told me when I was in my 20’s:
*Character counts
*Crony capitalism is bad
*Russia is our enemy
*Tariffs are taxes
*The Constitution is sacrosanct
*Government power should be limited, restrained, and checked by congress.
Guess they were just joking.

Happy DOUBLE INDEMNITY Day! At the start of the iconic film noir, Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) says it's July 16, 1938. July 16 is also the birthday of his co-star Barbara Stanwyck. Coincidence or an inside joke? #TCMParty

It's not often that corporate lawyers are presented as heroes, but Martin Sixsmith's recounting of the Yukos shareholders's lawsuit against Russia is an exception.

When you find yourself accidentally and axiomically aligned with @USWPColby. I wasn’t saying middle powers are “useless” - far from it. I was saying history proves (WEU/EU, ASEAN, Quad) you can’t aggregate middle powers into a major force. Sum is always less than its parts.
❗️ Axios reports the Senate sanctions bill targeting Russia now has support from at least 61 senators, including 39 Republicans and 22 Democrats, enough to overcome a filibuster. The legislation would allow the U.S. president to impose 100% tariffs on the five largest buyers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India, and also targets Russia’s shadow fleet. The bill still must be brought to a vote. #US
