The simple answer is yes. For Ghanaians, especially those who want Kurt Okraku out, there is a more complicated and disappointing answer. With today's news about Fifa planning a proposal that gives $20m to every FA per football cycle (every four years), this is the reality: • UEFA, who have started complaining through press statements, will ultimately fall in line. Why? They will not be able to convince their members to turn away this money, which is basically 8x what they usually get per cycle. Obscene money. They can choose to boycott the World Cup. For so many reasons, that's not gonna happen. • For Ghana, this new proposal means more money for the Okraku administration to use for "local football projects." • These "local football projects" will give Mr Okraku more leverage, more control and more power the FA members who will vote at the next election. • These GFA members, seeing this, will NOT vote Mr Okraku out. So...? • So, we should be ready for Mr Okraku to go for a third term in office. • The only hope to get Mr Okraku out, as a section of the public want, is through a government intervention. • The harsh truth: the government of the day will fall in line. NDC will play ball. NPP, when they eventually come, will also play ball with whoever occupies the seat at the time. Why? The kinds of monies in football are the sort of monies that politicians will not say no to, because... well, they are politicians. • Reminder: Infantino already has the support of about 200 FAs for his 2027 re-election, even before the World Cup. This new proposal simply nails the votes. Gianni will be Fifa boss until 2031. • The only thing that can get Gianni out is a corruption exposé of biblical proportions. • Similarly, the only thing that can get Mr Okraku out is a corruption exposé of Anas proportions... as happened to Mr Nyantakyi. • With the son of Donald Trump allegedly a mastermind behind this new Fifa deal, they will ensure every single FA in Africa, Asia and South America fall in line. • UEFA will toy with (and already are) the idea of breaking away from Fifa — that idea will be banished quickly, because, again, the monies FAs get from being part of Fifa cannot be remotely matched by UEFA. • If the world wants to fight Infantino, it will take extraordinary efforts and intervention. For now, we are witnessing our beautiful game transmogrify into a financial monster that will change things for all time. And, for now, we seem powerless to do anything about it. At the local level in Ghana, a similar sequence of events is playing out. Let's see if the real stakeholders — those who actually vote for these Presidents — develop a spine to do what's necessary to save the game as we know it now.
