This past week, I’ve been training in cold water. It’s essential preparation for my upcoming swim.
How do I swim in cold water? 🏊♂️👇💧
Let’s be clear - I can’t control the cold. I can’t change the water temperature, the weather, or the environment.
But I can control how I prepare and how I respond once I’m in.
There are 6 key things I focus on:
1. Acclimatisation: Building tolerance through repeated cold exposure.
2. Strength: Stronger muscles improve performance and help generate internal heat.
3. Speed: Swimming faster also generates more internal heat.
4. Insulation: More body fat helps retain warmth, though too much can reduce swimming efficiency.
5. Mental resilience: The ability to stay calm and push through discomfort is key.
6. Judgement: Knowing your limits is essential. Pushing through isn’t always brave – sometimes it’s foolish. Cold water can be deadly.
In short, swimming in cold water tests everything - your preparation, your strength, and your judgement.
@danswires Sorry for your loss Dan. Your dad made a good man of you. He’ll remain mightily proud of all you have achieved already & what you will achieve in the future. His spirit will live on in you too Dan & everyday you’ll honour him by doing what you do so well
'We need to take the profit margin out and break these companies up.'
@Feargal_Sharkey believes that water companies should be 're-nationalised' as he calls for a 'radical reform' of the regulartory systems.
It’s going to be a 💩💩💩💩Bank Holiday Weekend around Lyme Bay. So much discharging into the sea, rivers & streams around our favourite swim locations😱
It’s a no swim weekend & a crap portent for summer🤷♂️ can you help?@RichardFoordLD
