And that's a wrap on our inaugural #WIADIndy! We had some great chats on biases, context and assumption with our fabulous speakers! Huge thanks go to @RobBogue, Jeff Butler, @mcleodm3 and @JustinZalewski for their insights! #WIAD19
Batting clean up in our speaker lineup is @JustinZalewski on cognitive biases in IA. When we understand the weird ways our brain can work, we can counteract the issues cognitive biases can cause in our work.

Building a strong IA doesn’t just build the functions your program needs. Structuring your data properly can also open up new insights (and Star Trek references), for both you and your users, says @mcleodm3.

Biases begin early… sometimes, way too early. Like, 5:30 a.m. too early.
Eastern time is the default for lots of the business world, but @mcleodm3 shows how even small, invisible assumptions like EST can be painful.

Microservices can help when contexts start to clash.
Find your bounded contexts. Understand how to create the informational support for each area’s context, and build for each.

Building a database for customer data seems simple. But what does customer mean to a sales person? What does a customer mean to the support team? How do you build an #informationarchitecture that takes into account both contexts?

Monoliths are so huge and unmanageable, if/when they are well past their prime (aka big balls of mud) the cost to replace is astronomical.
Smaller is better. Even if it’s terribly written, if it’s small, it can be understood (and replaced) when needed.

@RobBogue: Is 7 the magic number? Or is it 5? The answer depends on your location. So how sure are you about your assumptions and conclusions?

Rob: “Metadata vs. Folders: Who’s on the folder team?”
Jeff Butler: “My mom!”
Myth #1: Metadata is the key.
Truth #1: Metadata may be fancy, but there are times when nested folders are the right call.
