Iranian words loaned into Proto-Slavic and what they can tell us:
"The 23 words in this table...represent the best linguistic evidence for the contact between early pre-Slavs and Iranians...Four of these words designate geographic entities: the names of the Don, Dnieper, and Dniester rivers, and the Xorivica mountain near Kyiv. This region, just north of the Black Sea, is probably close to where the contact occurred; it was likely the location of the Iranians, while the pre-Slavs were further inland, closer to modern-day Belarus or Poland.

We also find eleven words which indicate at least a standard trade relationship between neighboring cultures. Five of these signify trade goods, such as types of fur coats, weapons, and books: *gunja ‘coarse hairy garment’, *kъrzьno ‘fur coat’, *kordъ ‘short sword’, *toporъ ‘axe’, and *kъniga ‘book’. Another four of these words are related in one way or another to animals, indicating either types of animals, their health status, body parts, or food: *xъrtъ ‘greyhound’, *xromъ ‘lame’, *xvostъ ‘tail’, and *xorna ‘food, fodder’. We also see two words that may point to conditions existing between neighbors. The word *xvorъ ‘sick, ill’ possibly referred originally to a particular illness that was prevalent among the Slavs’ Iranian neighbors, whereas *xox- /*xax- ‘love’ may have originally referred to exogamous relations between Slavs and Iranians that were frowned upon by the former.

..the last five words all fall into a religious sphere. Most controversially, I have included *bogъ ‘god’ as one of these Iranian borrowings, but its inclusion will not change my 92 analysis. We also see *rajь ‘paradise’ and the names of three pre-Christian Slavic deities: *Stribogъ ‘wind-god’, *Svarogъ ‘fire-god’, and *Xъrsь ‘sun-god’....Therefore, we can think of the Slavs adopting Iranian elemental deities into their own pantheon, perhaps displacing or merging with their native counterparts."
