@KIN110UofR the olympics allows countries to gain prestige and power through their athletes. To attain this, some resort to cheating. Take for example the 2002 figure skating scandal, where the French judge was allegedly pressured by Russia to rig the scores, taking Canada’s win
@KIN110UofR right now Regina Ringette is considering #participantshealth in a number of ways. Because our league is so small, it’s easier to enforce procedures like limiting rosters to 13 players per team, 3 team bubbles, 2 spectators per player at games etc. (1)
The city rinks have also enforced procedures such as only entering 10 minutes before ice time, the co-op is 30 minutes. This is to ensure proper sanitizing between teams. Masks are mandatory until helmets are on, and there are only a certain amount of players per room. (2)
@KIN110UofR#concussions in hockey has changed it’s culture. Teams are drafting less on fighters/enforcers and focus more on building a skilled roster. Although being able to hit well is an important asset, fights aren’t the main highlight in hockey anymore. Nice goals and good hands are in
@KIN110UofR A personal example of #overconformity is even in ringette, a non-contact sport, concussions are relevant. I had a teammate who was really talented but had to quit due to too many concussions. She would play too soon and not take enough time to heal. Was the risk really worth it?
@KIN110UofR I know so many people who’ve had to quit hockey because it was too expensive, they’d play baseball because it’s way cheaper. If you take a look around, most, if not all of the athletes have a fairly high or stable income. Its not solely in town either, imagine paying for billets
@KIN110UofR Ringette Canada has created a #skilldevelopment program in children’s ringette. They’re changing U8, U9 and U10 to three progressive devisions FUN1 ,2 and 3. This gives a child more time to learn the game and practice strengths, creating a more #fun environment for all skill sets
@KIN110UofR Last year when the Raptors made their run in the NBA finals and everyone across Canada held Jurassic Parks uniting the whole nation #functionalism
@KIN110UofR Again there’s that reputation of being the land of opportunity. There is a lot more money and tradition in sports participation. The way their colleges are funded looks like professional leagues. Even in their high schools, compared to ours where everyone plays and nobody watches
@KIN110UofR The states puts a major amount of their funding into their sports programs. They also have a much larger population. People seem to be drawn to the US and have the dream of wanting to play there. They’ve embodied that reputation of being the land of opportunity
@KIN110UofR If you’re a professional poker player would you call yourself an athlete? An athlete is someone who puts themselves through physical trials to compete for a goal. Anything that involves athletes and a contest or game is a sport
@KIN110UofR Physical exertion is associated with sport. However, yoga wouldn’t be considered sport even though it requires movement and exertion. Chess has competition, but it doesn’t require you to leave your chair. Sport is the element of competition and peak physical performance combined
