Open Letter to the Mayor of Bulawayo, Councillor David Coltart
Good morning Mayor @DavidColtart
I write to you on behalf of many students residing at the Bulawayo Students Accommodation City, particularly those studying at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST).
On the evening of 7 June 2026, a tragic incident occurred that has left many students deeply concerned about road safety around our residence. A young female student was struck by a speeding vehicle while attempting to cross the road to purchase food outside the accommodation complex. As students, we immediately mobilized and rushed her to United Bulawayo Hospitals, where she received medical treatment.
This unfortunate incident highlights a longstanding challenge faced by students living at the complex. Since residents are not permitted to cook within the accommodation facilities, many depend on food vendors who operate outside the main gate during the evenings. Every night, hundreds of students cross this Riverside road in search of meals, creating significant pedestrian traffic between the residence and the surrounding area, extending towards the Theological College of Zimbabwe.
With over a thousand students residing in the complex, the absence of adequate traffic-calming measures has become a serious safety concern. Despite the high concentration of pedestrians, many motorists continue to drive at excessive speeds along this stretch of road.
Your Worship, we respectfully appeal to the City of Bulawayo to consider dispatching the relevant engineering and roads team to assess the area and, where possible, install speed humps, pedestrian safety measures, and appropriate road signage. Such interventions could help prevent future accidents and potentially save lives.
We therefore place our trust in your leadership and the commitment of the @CityofBulawayo to creating a safer environment for students and residents alike.
We sincerely hope that this matter will receive urgent consideration before a more tragic outcome occurs.
Yours faithfully,
Chakona Nyasha
Student Leader

π Help Tinashe Get Back on His Feet π
Tinashe Gune (born 18 November 2004) is a young student pursuing a BTech in Civil Engineering in South Africa. After completing high school in 2022 and taking a gap year in 2023, he enrolled at university in 2024. Sadly, Tinashe fell seriously ill and was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Since February 2024, he has been undergoing dialysis three times a week while waiting for a kidney transplant.
Thanks to the generosity of many, the family has come a long way, but now theyβve reached a critical turning point:
- A suitable donor has been found
- Fortis Hospital in Gurgaon, India, is ready to perform the transplant, expected in December 2025 or early 2026
To move forward, they urgently need funds to cover:
- Travel for Tinashe, the donor, and one family member
- Accommodation and food for the three during a four-month stay (the donor will return home after about one month)
- The transplant procedure and all related medical care
- Post-operation monitoring and follow-up both in India and back home
The estimated cost from Fortis Hospital is USD $35,200 for medical treatment and accommodation, plus USD $7,200 for travel, food, and incidentals, totaling USD $42,400. After previous fundraising, the family still needs USD $25,000, plus a $5,000 contingency, bringing the fundraising target to USD $30,000.
Every donation, share, and prayer will bring Tinashe closer to regaining his health and continuing his journey toward a bright future. No contribution is too small.
Please consider supporting or sharing this urgent appeal. πβ€οΈ

URGENT APPEAL FOR HELP β TONDERAI MAUCHAZA (16)
We kindly appeal to your hearts to help my brother Tonderai Mauchaza a 16-year-old boy suffering from a rare and painful condition called Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP) a disorder that makes him extremely sensitive to sunlight and causes the development of tumors on his face and head.
Tonderai urgently needs:
- Blood laboratory tests
- A CT scan and X-ray
- Surgery to remove the tumors
Unfortunately Tonderai lives under difficult circumstances. He is under the care of my Grandmother who is not working and iam also trying my best to help him with piece jobs that i do daily but it is not enough since the same money from the piece jobs caters for food and other basics so affording the medical costs which he needs urgently is difficult.
We are kindly reaching out to the public, friends, and well-wishers for financial assistance so that my brother can access the treatment he so desperately needs.
Any amount you can give will make a big difference.
I kindly ask you all to come together and give my brother Tonderai hope and a chance to live a healthier life.
Please Note: (I have insert a less graphic picture of him. For those who may wish to see how he is looking now. You may contact me on the number below so you get to see him through whatsapp)
