On 3 October, WildlifeDirect joined the 10th Landscape Game Count, organised by the Athi-Kapiti Wildlife Conservancies Association, bringing together conservationists, students, community members and partners across the Athi-Kapiti landscape.
At Swara Plains Conservancy, the team took part in the morning game count, recording 522 wildlife observations across birds, grazers, browsers and carnivores.
Our team included 11 community children, 8 students, and 9 WildlifeDirect staff and interns, making the experience an opportunity not only to collect important wildlife data, but also to learn directly from the landscape and connect with others working to protect it.
The day also provided valuable opportunities to network with conservation organisations.
We partnered with @MMTrust, who provided the Overlander that supported our team throughout the day.

Saturday Botany Club at the WildlifeDirect Field Lab, where science and art create magic.
Some of the questions were very revealing:
🌱Can some plants grow without soil? Why does grass grow? Why do trees drop leaves? 🍃Who gave plants names? 🌵

@wildlifedirect Imagine the excitement of finally visiting Nairobi National Park and seeing lions and giraffes up close! It's a reminder of the importance of making our national treasures accessible to all. Have you ever visited any other parks around Kenya?
Imagine growing up just minutes from Nairobi National Park, yet never having had the opportunity to enter it. For many children in Nairobi, one of the world’s most extraordinary national parks is close enough to see on a map, but still beyond their reach.
Then imagine the wonder of entering the park for the first time: city traffic giving way to birdsong, buildings opening onto sweeping grasslands, and a skyline of cranes replaced by giraffes. Families of ducks move across the water, while rhinos, buffalo, hippos and lions inhabit an extraordinary wilderness within our capital city.
On World Rhino Day WildlifeDirect and partners @conservationnation and @movingmountainstrust, made a difference for children and rhinos. We took a group of students in Kibra, and their teachers, on their first trip into Nairobi Park to see rhinos. These young conservationists were the first of over 4,000 students to receive their Kifaru Challenge certificates and badges after completing the module. They spotted many species and had a life changing day out
Our Nature Positive School clubs give over 13,000 children across the region access to award winning relevant fun conservation films, and lessons in conservation and environmental protection including disaster preparedness. Many of the schools also visit our field lab, the first conservation area for kids where immersion in nature includes art, science and fun. We know that just on me trip to a park can be a life changing experience, and we thank KWS for creating a season of special rates for children.
Our dream is to take 1 million children on a learning journey in conservation and regenerative living by supporting educators in public schools with content, tools and means to sustain vibrant clubs and bring children to our world class parks.
It’s all free thanks to supporters like you. To reach our goal we need funding, materials, designers, photographers, illustrators, digital creators, educators, scientists, corporate sponsors and partners, transport and access to wilderness areas.
To learn how you can help please schedule a meeting with our CEO Dr Paula Kahumbu by emailing [email protected]

🦏𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗥𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗗𝗮𝘆: From One School to Another
Peter Eloto, a teacher and WildlifeDirect Warriors Club patron at Kwanjiku Comprehensive School in Laikipia County, is a powerful example of how #ConservationEducation can extend beyond the classroom and continue to create impact even when educators move to new communities.
Peter previously taught at a school where he participated in #WildlifeDirect’s conservation programmes.
After moving to Kwanjiku Comprehensive School, he carried that experience with him, establishing a WildlifeDirect Warriors Club and engaging learners in conservation action.
At his new school, Peter has successfully implemented the #ClimateAction Project and the #KifaruChallenge, giving learners opportunities to understand environmental challenges, develop practical solutions and take meaningful action for #wildlife and their #communities
His experience demonstrates the value of investing in teachers as conservation champions.
When educators are equipped with knowledge, tools and practical conservation programmes, they can carry these lessons forward, inspire new generations and expand the reach of conservation beyond a single school.
As we mark World Rhino Day, Peter’s journey reminds us that protecting rhinos and other threatened species begins with building a generation that understands, values and takes action for wildlife.
One teacher. A new school. A new generation of conservation champions.

OPEN LETTER TO H.E. PRESIDENT RUTO, PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA
Dear Mr President,
You, perhaps more than any president before you, have spoken openly and frequently about your faith. But prayer cannot replace responsibility. Your leadership is completely silent on the destruction of God’s creation. Faith without stewardship is hollow.
Our forests are being cut down, rivers are polluted, mountains are burning and coastal habitats degraded. National parks and wildlife corridors are under constant pressure from roads, buildings and developments.
Everywhere we look, nature is under attack. Our country is rapidly dismantling the natural systems that keep it alive.
On 2 September, the International Theological Commission published Caring for Our Common Home: A Responsible and Fraternal Response to the Triune God, with the authorization of Pope Leo XIV.
Its message is direct: the ecological crisis is also a theological crisis. It reminds us that everything is connected. These words could have been written for Kenya.
When ecosystems are pushed to collapse, we become hyper vulnerable to climate changes and when people are pushed to destitution, social order also collapses. What we are facing is not just ecological collapse, but a collapse of our values.
We cannot destroy the systems that protect life and then act surprised when illness, hunger, conflict, poverty and political upheaval follow.
Mr President, the Constitution of Kenya recognizes the right of every person to a clean and healthy environment. It obliges the State to protect biodiversity, forests, water systems and the ecological inheritance of future generations. Yet environmental protection is treated as an inconvenience that can be pushed aside for politically connected developments.
It is no longer enough for leaders to plant ceremonial trees while forests are being degraded elsewhere. We cannot celebrate Kenyan tourism while destroying the habitats on which that wildlife depends on.
I ask you to publicly embrace the central message of Caring for Our Common Home and make care for creation a national moral duty. Make ecological regeneration core to our identity.
Direct your government to stop developments that threaten the integrity of nature, parks and ecology. Make regenerative ecology and park visits required in every school.
Kenya does not have to choose between people and nature. That is a false choice. A country without functioning ecology cannot be prosperous. When nature collapses, the economy follows.
Mr President, this is a moment for moral leadership. You must step up.
Dr @paulakahumbu
This is what happens when curiosity meets the field.
Daniel, an art intern at the WildlifeDirect Field Lab, had his first-ever rhino sighting. He couldn't get close enough for a clear look, so he went back and drew what his eyes couldn't quite capture, but his memory wouldn't let go of.
This is the kind of experience we build into every field placement: real encounters with wildlife, translated into real skill and real stories. Art, science, conservation- all learned in the field, not just the classroom.
