Finnish students spend 50 % less time in school than students in the US and yet they get 15 mins of recess every hour. Oh and that 50% less time actually gives teachers time to plan, collaborate and prep without spending their nights and weekends doing so.
The teacher resignation crisis has illuminated several key issues. Teachers need: 1) time to eat lunch, 2) reduced workload, 3) appropriate compensation, 4) restroom breaks, 5) autonomy, 6) a voice in policy-making, 7) quality #PD, 8) respect. What else? #edchat#iteachmath
If you are a decision maker in your school district, stop having trainings to โhelpโ teachers build more resilience and perseverance. So insulting! Instead, remove tasks from their already full plate! #EdChat
They tell teachers โDo self care! Put your health first!โ and then act shocked when teachers leave the profession. Teachers are totally burned out and the only solution seems to be a different career. #teachers
We are doing best by our students when we take care of teachers. As someone once said, "the teacher's working environment is the student's learning environment".
I canโt believe I have to say this:
If you donโt invest more into retaining current teachers instead of recruiting new teachersโ the โnewโ teachers will eventually leave, too.
As teachers, we often hesitate to talk about how hard teaching really is. We have to be honest about the challenges teachers face if weโre going to work toward addressing them.
Itโs not supposed to be this difficult and behaving like nothing is wrong doesnโt help our cause.
