In many legal systems assault doesn't mean physical violence, it means causing someone to fear harmful or offensive contact. The physical act itself is a separate offense called battery.

So if you've ever raised a fist or taken an aggressive step towards someone or made a flippant threatening comment... that could potentially have been an assault.
