The Economist has published a revealing little story about the US’s clean-energy sector that neatly captures the whole logic of the tech war.

Over 2022–24, Chinese firms poured some $15.5 billion into US solar and battery manufacturing, building state-of-the-art factories that Americans could not build themselves. Then, in July 2025, Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” barred any company with Chinese links from the subsidies that make the sector viable, and designated Chinese firms “Foreign Entities of Concern”, alongside Iran, North Korea and Russia.

As a result, Chinese investors have been forced into fire sales: nearly $9 billion of assets cancelled, paused or sold off, some at massive discounts, snapped up by North American financiers.

So a Chinese-built solar plant in Dallas now flies the stars and stripes, while an executive effuses: “Never bet against the United States’ engineering and innovation.” It’s quite a boast to make about a factory you didn’t design, built with technology you didn’t invent, on assembly lines – as the Economist notes – “full of Chinese technology”.

US media never stops going on about Chinese companies “stealing” American technology, but the reality is the opposite. And of course it won’t have the desired effect. You can expropriate a factory, but you can’t expropriate the decades of patient state investment, industrial planning and accumulated know-how that produced it. The proof is in the detail the article can’t avoid: China still makes 95 percent of the world’s polysilicon, and the very executives celebrating US “innovation” are now demanding higher tariffs on Chinese inputs so they can “be globally competitive”.

Incredible. Having helped themselves to the fruits of Chinese investment, they now need protection from Chinese competition. That is not the confidence of a technological leader; it is the anxiety of a rentier.

Outgoing Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard — set to leave her post at the end of the month — has published a tranche of declassified documents detailing the activities of US-funded biological laboratories in Ukraine.

"Many of these US government-funded biolabs were conducting research on dangerous and highly contagious pathogens, in some cases including gain-of-function research, with virtually no oversight or supervision," the Office of the DNI stated.

Gabbard added: "Despite the obvious potential for catastrophic global consequences that research on dangerous pathogens can have, policymakers and so-called medical officials — such as Dr. Fauci — along with figures in the Biden administration's national security team lied to the American people about the existence of US-funded and supported biological laboratories, and threatened those who tried to expose the truth. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence will continue to work closely with partners across government to determine where these labs are located, what pathogens they contain, and to put an end to dangerous gain-of-function research that threatens the health and wellbeing of the American people and people around the world."

A series of US airstrikes have killed 175 people in Nigeria. While the US military’s AFRICOM stated that 175 “terrorists” had been eliminated over the course of three days of bombing, locals state that dozens of civilians were killed, and countless more injured. Hospitals in Borno state were overrun with emergency cases.

THE U.S. KILLED three Indian sailors on Wednesday, it was confirmed.

An American aircraft shot a missile into the tanker's engine room as it transited the Gulf of Oman, causing the death of three crewmen. They were likely blown to pieces, with their remains lost at sea.

It was the US’s eighth illegal attack on commercial ships.

The US navy said the Palau-flagged ship, the M/T Settebello, “repeatedly failed to comply with directions from American forces".

However, the US has no legal authority to give orders in the waters of Oman, which is more than 11,000 kilometers away from the American coast.

BROKENHEARTED
A family in Himachal Pradesh said they were brokenhearted after having been informed that one of the dead was their family member Aditya Sharma, who was serving as a deck cadet. They are hoping his remains can be recovered.

The Indian government expressed shock. "We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman, earlier today,” said India’s Ministry of External Affairs in a statement.

“Of the 24 Indian crew onboard, 21 Indians have been rescued thus far and three Indians are reportedly missing. Our Embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and proactively coordinating with the Omani authorities in the ongoing Search and Rescue operation.”

SECOND ATTACK ON INDIAN CREW
On Monday, US forces bombed the Marivex, another oil tanker with an Indian crew in the Gulf of Oman, with a Palau registration.

In that instance, all 24 crew were rescued by the Omani military.

And again in that case, US Central Command said that the ship failed to comply with US instructions.

The US has intimidated 134 ships to turn away and attacked eight vessels whose crews defied threats, according to Centcom.

NO LEGAL RIGHT
No country has the legal right to randomly stop ships anywhere in the world--let alone attack them. The US is doing what it claims Iran is doing, although the Iranians are clearly defending themselves on their own coastline, while the Americans are supposed to be on the other side of the world.

Still, Washington, protected by powerful allies, including Israel and the UK, is never held accountable for war crimes.

"This is simply unacceptable," Arsenio Dominguez, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization, said on Wednesday, after the killing of the Indian seamen were reported.
