Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has opened up on Chelsea’s attempt to prise him away from the Stadium of Light this summer, explaining that he decided to stay on Wearside because he feels the Black Cats’ project “isn’t done yet”.
Now, speaking to The Sports Agents podcast, Xhaka has addressed Chelsea’s interest, admitting that it was a privilege to be linked with the Stamford Bridge outfit, while also outlining his reasons for staying in the North East. He said: “When I signed the contract here, there was a plan behind the scenes, and the plan was to stick to this project, to believe in this project, and to work for this project. And I always say to myself and to the people around, I didn't come here for one season.
“It's a big privilege that a football club like Chelsea want a player, nearly 34 years old. There was something behind it, yes, for sure, but my commitment to the club was straight for it.”
He added: “When I spoke with the owner of Sunderland, I told him from the beginning, I don't have the feeling that this project is done yet, and this is my motivation. I want to enjoy the European football with this football club, with the fans, and hopefully we can get more after this season.”

🔄 Regis Le Bris’ subs were good, and they were enough to clinch the points.
✍🏼 Still feels like they’re short of a couple of players though, especially on the wing! Busy couple of days ahead…👀

Régis Le Bris says Sunderland do not need to rush into reinforcing their forward line in the January window, but hinted that they are assessing their options.
Le Bris has previously said that the club are looking at 'two or three' positions in the January transfer window, with a central midfielder believed to be another position where the club are open to recruiting.
If Sunderland do sign more forward players, then it could lead to Eliezer Mayenda leaving on loan at the very end of the window. Mayenda has struggled for game time in recent weeks but Le Bris says he remains a key part of his plans.
"We'll see," Le Bris said.
