Walton’s Violin Sonata was written for Yehudi Menuhin, completed in 1948. Was later orchestrated by Christopher Palmer, following the logic that Walton had himself prepared orchestrations of his String Quartet in A Minor & the guitar Bagatelles. @ComposerWilliam @WilliamWalton_

‘Touch her soft lips and part’ comes from William Walton’s music for Laurence Olivier’s film of Henry V. Olivier called it “the most wonderful score I’ve ever heard on a film”. He wasn’t wrong.

Not everyone liked the Third Symphony. At the 1904 Viennese premiere one critic left the hall early, muttering that Mahler deserved a spell in jail for perpetrating such nonsense! William Walton said: ‘It’s all very well, but you can’t call that a symphony’. What do you think?
