@DamonLinker Do you think it is superior to The Sopranos and The Wire? I’m also impressed by Mad Men but don’t think it is quite the equal of those two.
The New York Times’ final list of the 100 Best TV Shows of the 21st Century is now complete.
What do you make of the final ranking? Which placements surprised you the most?
@EmmaMAshford@Dylan_J_Welch Structural realism has a lot to offer, especially as a first cut and as a theory of constraints. But even SRs look to sub-systemic variables in their analysis, especially when dealing with hegemon in a unipolar balance of power. 2/2
@EmmaMAshford@Dylan_J_Welch Taps into classic philosophy of science issue around parsimony vs richness and when you are in (and how bad it is to be in a) a degenerative research program. 1/2
“The Dolphins, the league's youngest team with an average age of 25.5, weren't much of a test. But expectations are high for Miami this season under first-year coach Jeff Hafley.”
Must have been written by really bad AI because sports journalists & Vegas don’t believe this. @AP
The 60s, 70s, and 00’s were wayyyy more tumultuous. The 80s were still under the shadow of the Cold War but it was a great decade, especially once inflation was tamed and the economy grew. There is a reason Reagan ran on “morning in America” successfully in 1984.
Ryan Reynolds says ’80s nostalgia “paves over all the trauma” of the “tumultuous” decade:
“The 80s was a brutal, brutal time for people. It was a fucking mess and people forget that. It was a tremendous strife. Socio political tensions everywhere. We were still pretty fresh off a Cuban missile crisis, which was only 15-20 years before. It’s a tumultuous period, but you look back at it now and you’re like, ‘Oh, yeah. ‘Top Gun.’ Cocaine!’ Like, ‘No!’ It was really scary.”
In Apple TV’s “Mayday,” Reynolds stars as a U.S. Navy pilot who builds an unlikely friendship with an eccentric ex-KGB agent (Kenneth Branagh) obsessed with ’80s American culture.

Remarkable piece for fans: “It is, at the very least, a reasonable inference that the epithet applied by Homer exclusively to Ithaca, ἀμφίαλος, was chosen because it describes a feature different from that described by the epithet applied exclusively to islands, ἀμφίρυτος.”
Today, as we enter the summer of Homer's Odyssey, we publish one of our most important pieces to date. Professors James Diggle and John Underhill continue their quest to find the *true* Ithaca, arguing that the hero's homeland was in fact no island at all. https://t.co/eDdVz1dWPf
