The annual High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is underway July 7-16 in New York, where progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be reviewed.

WILPF is engaged in the conference with our coalition, the Women's Major Group. Ahead of the HLPF we have collectively drafted a position paper with feminist analysis on all #SDGs, including the SDGs under review (SDG 6 on water and sanitation, SDG 7 on energy, SDG 9 on industry and infrastructure, SDG 11 on sustainable cities, and SDG 17 on the means of implementation).

👉 The paper calls for bold political action that addresses the structural causes of injustice rather than their symptoms.

👉 The paper also includes a strong call against #militarism as a barrier to sustainable development: "The world is deeply at odds with the promises of Agenda 2030. With less than five years to meet Agenda 2030, any progress is being actively dismantled—by militarism, corporate capture, political authoritarianism, and the rapid rolling back of hard-won rights. Globally, only 35% of SDG targets are on track, nearly half are moving too slowly, and almost 18% are regressing….[but] there is no shortage of resources, only skewed political choices: in 2025 alone, billionaires added US$2.2 trillion to their collective wealth, and global military spending hit a record US$2.88 trillion.”

This week, WILPF’s Environment Advisor Katrin Geyer is at London Climate Action Week, a platform for global and local climate action, representing WILPF’s vision of ecological justice and feminist peace. This event brings together people and movements, turning climate urgency into real solutions.

WILPF has long made the case that the climate crisis and militarism are deeply connected. War destroys communities and ecosystems, while ever-growing military budgets drain funding from climate solutions. There is no credible path to a livable planet if governments continue to invest more in war than in a just transition.

This Wednesday 24 June, Katrin will speak on the panel “The Santa Marta Coalition of the Willing”, an event hosted by the largest climate media platform We Don’t Have Time. Katrin’s participation will mostly be centered on The Double Dividend, a report published in collaboration with the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative, arguing that reducing military spending is one of the most powerful levers to finance a global just transition away from fossil fuels.

This panel will be recorded and rendered available on the 25th of June.

For 11 years in a row, military spending has broken records. In 2025 alone, governments spent $2.88 trillion dollars on militaries, while funding for Sustainable Development Goals is falling short by $4 trillion dollars.

War increases poverty, destroys infrastructure, pollutes ecosystems, and fuels the very instability it claims to prevent.

War isn't inevitable. It's a political choice. Governments can redirect funds from militarism to peace, care, and justice.

Our May story reminds us that building peace means more than ending wars, it means confronting the systems that fuel them and lifting the voices of those who resist.

The May chapter of WILPF’s Stories of Feminist Peace 2025 underlined the importance of taking down oppressive structures by highlighting the voices of local changemakers.

Women in conflict zones from Palestine to Afghanistan are speaking out about the oppressive structures fuelling violence.  Through WILPF, they brought their knowledge and advocacy to international decision-making spaces.

Dismantling oppressive structures starts with individuals at the local level.

We often hear: “there is no correlation between military spending and lack of investments in social well-being", but this is a myth. Like other spending, the defence budget is a political choice, subject to governments’ own priorities.

Even if it seems a logical consequence that creating extra budget through loans would shield other spending, the reality that we witness today tells a different story : the highest ever recorded global military expenditure ($2.88 trillion, according to @SIPRIorg) and in parallel, unprecedented financial cuts of multilateral organizations precisely created to maintain international peace through peaceful means.

But have you ever wondered where this money actually comes from? Public funds: taxes paid today, or debt repaid by taxpayers tomorrow. Either way, it is people who ultimately pay the bill. The same people who depend on public health systems, affordable housing, and quality education are indirectly financing a system that weakens their own security, well-being, and fundamental rights.

It can’t be clearer which priorities our governments have chosen. It’s time to fund peace instead of war.
