Jesus didn't tell us to love our churches, our doctrines, or our scriptures. He told us to love our neighbors—regardless of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, or immigration status. When my religion tries to come between me and my neighbor, I will choose my neighbor.

Not once in the entire Bible does Jesus ask us to worship him. All he asks is that we follow him. Love like he loved: welcome the stranger, feed the hungry, heal the sick, and free the oppressed. They will know we are Christians by our love.

We should all be alarmed by the dangerous rhetoric coming from the White House this week, attacking our locally-run elections and threatening to federalize our voting systems. Even under a Republican majority, the Michigan Senate investigated and affirmed there was no systemic fraud in the 2020 election. And under our current Democratic majority, we strengthened ballot access in Michigan to break through Trump-backed barriers to voting.

As Chairman of the Senate Elections Committee, I wrote the law that affirmed our state canvassing and certification process to prevent unlawful federal intervention when counting Michigan votes. Any attempt to rip voting rights away in Michigan, and from the clerks who run our elections with security and integrity, is morally reprehensible and unconstitutional. In Michigan, we will protect our voters, not malicious Trump administration officials.
