Members of Namibia’s deaf community took to the streets this morning, calling for greater recognition of their human rights and improved access to essential services.

The march forms part of the International Week of the Deaf, observed from 21 to 27 September 2026, and coincides with the global commemoration of the International Day of Sign Languages.

Under the theme “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights", the community is calling for greater accessibility and the recognition of sign language as an essential means of communication.

Among their key demands are inclusive education, accessible healthcare and the availability of qualified sign language interpreters in public services.

The community says language barriers continue to limit deaf people’s ability to access information and participate fully in society.

The march aims to raise awareness of these challenges and push for stronger measures to ensure that deaf people can exercise their rights on an equal basis with others.

JUST IN: The Rundu Magistrate’s Court has convicted Matheus Reinhold Ipakwa (34) of the 2014 murder of Chinese businessman Gao Li, who was killed in his house in the Rainbow residential area of Rundu in a case that shocked the community.

Ipakwa was found guilty of murder and housebreaking with intent to rob. He was initially charged alongside two other accused, who Magistrate Mufana Barry acquitted due to a lack of evidence directly implicating them. The matter was postponed to tomorrow for sentencing after mitigation was heard this afternoon.

Prior to hearing his verdict, Ipakwa had to be restrained by police after threatening violence against an NMH journalist filming his arrival, saying he did not want to be filmed.
