I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer, the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass through me.
When it has gone past, I will turn to see its path.
Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain.- Dune
we missed our entire YC batch to build in Ukraine.
we went from idea to field testing, landed $500M in LOIs, and sold 45 units to a special forces unit
all in 8 weeks.
some things you just can’t build in SF
If you’re a performance marketer, media buyer, ads manager, ads guy or whatever they call us these days
If you want to have an easier time in your career you need to develop a creative strategist bone.
I was never that guy, I was always the data cruncher.
Now a lot of things have changed. I’m still not super creative but I’ve looked at so much ads data to know exactly what I’m looking for when the design team, UGC or AI produces my creatives.
There are specific elements of winning creatives that will always work once you’ve seen the patterns. These cannot be described but the eye to catch them can be trained.
This gives you a base to get started on what you want to test, especially when you join a new company or get a new client.
Some people have swipe files for this purpose too.
Look at a lot of ads as much as you can these helped me write better briefs and run more coherent tests.
Ultimately if you cannot run more ads please don’t complain when meta and other channels show you pepper.
The more you spend, the more you need to refresh because you’d run into fatigue faster than someone not spending as much.
As much as it lies within you, if you’re spending 200k and above a day, 2 weeks should not catch you without introducing new batches of content to test.
Secret of the DTC Universe #1: A winning creative is only 30% about copy.
This should be obvious, but it’s an important one for the copywriters out there who are trying to be creative strategists...
Along with the creative strategists who aren't getting the results they want.
Copy is important of course (will talk about this more when I share secret #2 in a future post)...
But there are a ton of factors that go into determining whether any creative is a big winner for a brand or not…
Including:
-The video editor
-The creator or spokesperson (in a yapper ad, for example)
-The voiceover (in a narrated ad)
-The image (in statics DUH, but especially long-form native style on meta)
-The visuals shown on screen
-The opening shot
-The opening caption on screen
-The pacing
-The music and sound effects (or lack thereof)
-The way the product is demonstrated
-The way the entire thing is assembled
Maybe that sounds obvious, but it’s so crucial:
Because if any single one of the above factors is wrong…
Then you (or I) could write the best ad in the world and still see it bomb.
That’s why, as a creative strategist, you should WANT to be involved in reviewing every single ad.
If you’re working for a client…
You should find out which video editors are the best, and fight to have those video editors being the ones who turn your ad into a video creative.
Same thing with creators - if the brand does a lot of “yapper” style video ads for example - where it’s a creator talking on camera and then sharing the product…
You should fight to have the best creators being the ones to deliver your script…
And then when the video ads do come back…
You should review them carefully and not be afraid to leave comments or notes if something is screwed up.
This is crucial for so many reasons…
But the biggest reason is this:
At the end of the day, it’s your ass on the line.
This is really important to understand as well:
If your ads bomb, the company/client is probably not going to blame the video editors or even the creator.
They are most likely going to blame you.
“I guess their hooks/scripts/big ideas aren’t very good.”
“They have a super low hit-rate compared to the other creative strategists.”
“You’re fired.”
Seems unfair, but that’s life…
And also, it's actually totally fair...
Because making successful creatives is literally your job.
You are a creative strategist. Not a copywriter.
The difference is everything I described above.
And making sure the creatives are good is the main thing you are getting paid for.
One brain-dead service you can sell to small business owners like realtors, dentists, CPAs, and gym owners is an AI Audit. You don’t need to be a developer or technical at all. You just need to ask the right questions.
In essence, it’s recommending what to automate (the high-friction, repetitive tasks killing their time) and the exact right tools to make it work. Brain-dead. Straightforward.
A killer entry point is to provide a free 30-min business audit first, then upsell a full paid AI assessment + implementation
With the AI wave hitting, business owners and professionals want to save hours, cut costs, and 10x efficiency but they have no clue where to start. Your job is to find their biggest bottlenecks, prescribe simple wins, and cash out in the process.
Book a call → use an AI notetaker on Zoom → upload the transcript to Claude (or your favorite LLM). Claude will instantly spot the opportunities and spit out a custom report.

I was in 200 level when I stumbled on @omoalhajaabiola Facebook profile.
I did a five-year course, completed NYSC, and I’m already two years post-NYSC. Through all that time, this man has remained one of the few people whose content genuinely shaped my freelance journey.
Funny enough, I got my very first client from his Facebook comment section.
Years later, he’s still doing the same thing. Sharing opportunities, teaching, and helping people grow.
If you’re serious about freelancing, follow him. You’ll save yourself a lot of trial and error.
FINDING GOLDEN NICHES
Following my last post yesterday, I received tons of messages on how to find the best niche(s) with less competition. Well, this is simple. It's more art than science. In fact, a simple good search with rich keywords will show some less competitive niches. Let’s learn how
The particular niche you are targeting is one of the biggest determining factors as a digital marketer/freelancer. The more crowded and competitive a niche is, the lower your open rates, response rates and conversion rates if you pitch them.
From my research (it's my personal finding ooo), I suggest staying away from the following niches:
❌Doctors
❌ Dentists
❌ Chiropractors
❌ HVAC
❌ Gyms and
❌ Plastic surgeons.
Chiropractors and Dentists receive up to 100 emails a day. Yes, you hear me right. One hundred cold emails Everyday.
The best niches are the ones that are untapped and untouched by digital markers. Your aim should be finding a niche that people haven't flooded or saturated.
Most people only think dentists, doctors and chiropractors have big money to spend and can afford high tickets. You'd be surprised seeing other niches spending some bucks higher than what a doctor could
A campaign targeting farmers/ranchers receive a 10% call rate. Horseback riding instructors have 8% call rate. There is 9% call rate for a campaign targeting restaurant equipment.
Here are the cold hard numbers:
✅ Horseback riding instructors = 12%
✅ Corporate catering = 9%
✅ Boxing Gyms = 7%
✅ Flight schools = 11%
✅ Plumbers who do drain cleaning = 5%
✅ Yacht Charters = 10%
✅ Golf Instructors = 9%
The more you niche down, the faster/quicker/better your results will be. For example, if plumbers are your targets, instead of just cold pitching every plumber, you can focus on plumbers who specialize in drain cleaning.
You wanna target dentists, why not go for horse dentists. What about dog dentists? Dog groomers and the likes.
Lest I forget, cold emailing can be frustrating and tiring but the result is always sweet. Don't relent! Learn how to write highly-converting cold emails here https://t.co/oW41JdaAR4
It’s another day, another opportunity to be a world class
When you work with solid people early enough, they quietly reset your standards. You carry that benchmark with you forever.
One thing I've noticed after working with great engineers for 12 years globally: They never outgrow the fundamentals.
It's about deeply understanding how things work and the trade offs behind every decision. You learn them early, then spend the rest of your career revisiting them.
AI changed many things in this industry, but it doesn't replace foundational knowledge. Don't let AI do the thinking for you. Use it as a personal tutor. Challenge it, ask it questions, and make explain every design choice and implementation you encounter.
Trust me, you'll meet plenty of "senior" engineers who have years of experience but still get confused by the fundamentals. Don't be that guy because it shows. Keep your foundation solid.

Claude Fable 5 will be available again globally tomorrow.
After a series of productive conversations with the US government, we're redeploying the model with a new set of classifiers to target and block more cybersecurity tasks. In the near term, some routine tasks like coding and debugging will fall back to Opus 4.8. We’ll continue to refine these classifiers over the coming weeks to reduce false positives and better distinguish genuine misuse from legitimate requests.
We’ve also begun drafting a consensus framework—with Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and other Glasswing partners—for assessing the severity of AI jailbreaks and how AI developers should respond to them. We invite other industry partners and model providers to join us in this effort.
Finally, we’re scaling up our collaboration with the US government on model testing and safeguards. This will include pre-release access to models and safeguards for evaluation, information sharing on jailbreaks and misuse, and dedicated resources for joint research.
Thank you to our users for your patience, and to our partners across the government, industry, and the research community who worked alongside us to make Fable 5 available again.

@Mucrunch anger management. because every single arm of the organisation you work for will stress you out. designers will mess up, video editor will do their own, web developers will also shoot blank. after that, learn to sell and convince.
