@charlemagne_fig I think Tappei is more passionate than that. I doubt he’s just passively accepting designs whether he likes or dislikes them. He himself says he doesn’t imagine his characters clearly and Otsuka’s designs are when the characters truly come to life. He chose Otsuka after all.

@charlemagne_fig Capella’s design fits the criteria for being a loli. So much so that I remember the annoying redditor complaints about it back in 2018. They aren’t described as sexy, I know. But they are still revealing loli designs. Liliana’s has little reason too, he just did that.

@charlemagne_fig Yes, but surely the design process is more supervised than the many illustrations he has to create. We know this because designs are tinkered and rejected. I think their communication is just fine, their interview from 2021 shows a close artistic relationship.

@Fena205 Because the tweet is in jest. Similar to Oda’s responses in SBSs. Many Japanese authors do this, this humor is even in lolicon anime. Tappei literally describes Liliana as a “legal loli” with revealing clothing and he started out writing Louise fan fiction.

@charlemagne_fig But Kiritaka isn’t a lolicon nor is he a perv, so Tappei’s reply calling him those things isn’t in complete seriousness. Tappei saying “lolicon is a disease!” to Kiritaka is clearly in humor.

@charlemagne_fig I’m not denying Otsuka’s mistakes within his illustrious but when it comes to character designs themselves, Tappei is very closely involved and approves of everything. The interview from December 2025 proves that. Tappei is deeply involved and approving of these “sicknesses”,eh?

@charlemagne_fig Are you new to this topic or are you completely unaware that lines like “Lolicon is a disease!” are common humor in otaku spaces? Even series like Kodomo no Jikan and Monogatari have such phrases. If Tappei was against it, he wouldn’t have Otsuka as his illustrator.

@lawakwlek38185 That’s not exactly an Otsuka issue as Tappei describes Liliana and Arakiya to be very revealing. I think their designs are a bit meh as well, but Arakiya has a cool color scheme at least.
