From the very inception of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal politics, the CPI(M) has been the only party to consistently maintain that TMC is not a political party at all! Mamata Banerjee might even return to the Congress. The TMC ruled the state for a long 15 years, and it has been barely a month since they were ousted from power. Yet, within this short span, the party is virtually on the brink of extinction!
More than 20 MPs have switched sides to join the NDA camp, and two Rajya Sabha MPs have resigned. However, the initial cracks first appeared in the Legislative Assembly, where nearly 60 MLAs took the opportunity to turn against Mamata.
And to think, this is the same Mamata Banerjee who was once hailed in pan-Indian political circles as one of the country's most experienced and astute politicians! Every opposition party faces immense and constant pressure from the BJP. There is never a moment when attempts are not being made to engineer defections in the opposition camp. But has any other political party faced a collapse of this magnitude? Why is it that the TMC alone is on the verge of an end today? One hopes that people outside West Bengal, who held a certain perception of this party, will now finally see through the illusion!
