There are books going into these shredders that exist nowhere else on Earth. Booksellers are watching last-surviving copies get bulk-ordered by anonymous buyers, spine-sliced by hydraulic machines, and pulped.

And here's the part that should make your skin crawl. The destruction is the legal strategy.

A federal judge ruled the whole pipeline is fair use for one reason. When Anthropic scanned a book and destroyed the original, one copy replaced another. Keep the paper after scanning and you're holding two copies, which puts you back in infringement territory.

Shredding the book is what makes it legal. Saving it is the crime.

The internal documents are worse. Anthropic's program had a codename, Project Panama, and a memo that said the goal was to "destructively scan all the books in the world." Another line instructed staff to keep it quiet because "we don't want it to be known that we are working on this."

They knew. They named it something boring on purpose.

And the hunger only grows from here. AI labs specifically want pre-2022 print because it's the last text on Earth guaranteed to be written by humans. Every year that pool shrinks and the bulk orders get bigger. Brokers now sell anonymous million-book purchases to whoever's next.

Five hundred years of surviving fires, wars, and floods. Ended by a hydraulic paper cutter in a warehouse, so a model that gets deprecated in 18 months can autocomplete your emails.

I ask any thinking person compare the processing of books below. End to end the non destructive scanning on the right is faster and preserves knowledge for the ages.

My advice to atone is to stock and maintain physical library free and open to anyone.

Honestly, this is a crime against humanity. The worst book ever written does not deserve to be physically permanently destroyed for whatever reason, let alone feed AI models.
