This leather pouch, recovered from the Mary Rose, features an amazingly well preserved monogram depicting the letters IhS, embroidered in silver thread.
This is almost certainly the Sacred Monogram, representing the name of Jesus Christ.
Hilary Mantel inherits a Cromwell from G.R. Elton and fills in the gaps.
Elton made Thomas Cromwell historically unavoidable; Mantel made him imaginatively present.
